MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - The Medan City Government visited the office of Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Sumbagut on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, to seek clarification regarding the long queues of vehicles at several fuel stations (SPBU) across Medan. The move was carried out following an instruction from Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas as part of efforts to monitor fuel distribution and ensure that the supply of fuel products (BBM) returns to normal.
The meeting was led by Medan Regional Secretariat Assistant for Economic and Development Affairs, Citra Effendi Capah, together with representatives from Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Sumbagut. Also attending the meeting were Head of the Medan Communication and Information Office Arrahmaan Pane, Head of the Protocol and Leadership Communication Division Arafat Syam, and Head of the Natural Resources Division Soeflie Putra.
Citra explained that the Medan City Government's visit was a continuation of the coordination meeting previously held on July 8, 2026. The coordination involved Pertamina, Hiswana Migas, the Directorate General of Oil and Gas (virtually), and the North Sumatra Police.
During the previous coordination meeting, Pertamina explained that disruptions in BBM distribution were caused by technical operational issues. In particular, the replacement of several tanker truck drivers affected the transportation process and fuel deliveries to stations. At that time, Pertamina expected distribution activities to return to normal by Friday, July 10, 2026.
However, conditions on the ground showed that vehicle queues were still occurring at several fuel stations. Some locations also experienced temporary shortages of both subsidized and non-subsidized fuel, affecting services provided to the public.
"Therefore, we came here to obtain clarity. The public needs certainty about what actually happened. Is the issue still the same as the previous explanation, or are there other factors causing BBM distribution to remain disrupted?" Citra said.
The Medan City Government emphasized that the visit was not only aimed at obtaining an explanation from Pertamina but also at providing support to ensure that fuel distribution problems could be resolved quickly.
"Following the Mayor's instruction, we continue to accompany and monitor the issue of BBM queues. We have also offered support to Pertamina. If there are areas where assistance is needed, the Medan City Government is ready to help," he stated.
As part of its support efforts, the Medan City Government deployed personnel from the Transportation Agency and the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) to several fuel stations. These officers assisted with traffic management and ensured that queues remained orderly without disrupting public activities.
During the meeting, Pertamina assured that fuel stocks in Medan remained secure. According to the explanation provided to the city government, the current disruption was not caused by limited supplies but solely by technical issues in the distribution process.
The Medan City Government hopes that the acceleration measures implemented by Pertamina will quickly produce results, allowing all fuel stations in Medan to resume normal operations and preventing residents from facing prolonged queues.
Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Sumbagut Medan Retail Sales Area Manager Tito Rivanto appreciated the attention shown by the Medan City Government, which directly participated in coordination efforts to resolve the BBM distribution issue.
Tito confirmed that fuel supplies in Medan remained available and were sufficient to meet public demand. He explained that Pertamina was currently carrying out internal improvements, particularly in the BBM distribution system involving tanker trucks.
Despite the ongoing adjustments, Pertamina continues to implement various measures to ensure fuel availability at all stations. These steps are being carried out simultaneously with improvements to the operational system.
To accelerate the recovery of distribution, Pertamina is increasing the number of tanker trucks, bringing in additional drivers from external partners, and expanding the number of 24-hour fuel stations in Medan.
"We hope these measures can gradually improve services for the public so that long queues no longer occur and disrupt public order in Medan," Tito said.
Regarding efforts to resolve the BBM queue issue, Tito stated that Pertamina continues to implement various measures to ensure fuel deliveries and distribution to all stations in Medan return to normal as soon as possible.
"We continue our efforts so that the normalization process can be completed as quickly as possible," he said.
The Medan City Government and Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Sumbagut will continue coordination to ensure that energy supplies for residents remain optimally available. The regional government will continue monitoring developments in the field until BBM distribution is fully stabilized.
Through cooperation between the city government and Pertamina, the resolution of BBM queues is expected to progress more quickly, allowing public activities in Medan to continue without further disruption caused by problems at fuel stations. (IDNC)
