KAMPUNG BERKAH SYAHMAD INAUGURATED: Deli Serdang Regent dr. H. Asri Ludin Tambunan inaugurates Kampung Berkah Syahmad as part of efforts to improve housing conditions and the community’s living environment while revitalizing the slum area.

DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM - Deli Serdang Regent dr. H. Asri Ludin Tambunan officially inaugurated Kampung Berkah Syahmad on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. The revitalization of the area is part of the Deli Serdang Regency Government's efforts to improve housing conditions and the community's living environment while removing the area from the category of slum settlements.

The inauguration was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the signing of a commemorative plaque. The Deli Serdang Regency Government also handed over house keys to beneficiaries whose homes had been renovated through the housing improvement program, as well as land certificates, Building Approval (Persetujuan Bangunan Gedung/PBG) documents, and Land and Building Tax (Pajak Bumi dan Bangunan/PBB) certificates with a value of zero rupiah.

The Kampung Berkah Syahmad revitalization program is not limited to the physical condition of the houses. Various aspects of the surrounding environment have also been improved, including drainage, waste management, sanitation and overall housing conditions. The goal is to create a healthier, safer and more comfortable residential area that is better suited to the needs of the community.

Comprehensive Revitalization of the Residential Area

Asri said the government's efforts to address slum settlements would not be limited to renovating houses. In his view, the quality of the surrounding environment is also an important part of the program so that the improvements can be fully felt by the community.

"The revitalization of Kampung Berkah Syahmad is not only about improving houses through a renovation program, but also about improving the entire surrounding environment. This includes drainage, sanitation and waste disposal, as well as ensuring proper housing conditions and a better living environment for the community," Asri said.

He emphasized that improvements to the residential environment must have a direct impact on the community. In addition to meeting the need for adequate housing, the revitalization of the area must also provide long-term benefits, particularly for the families living there.

"We want an area that was previously considered a slum to truly change. We hope that the improved environment will strengthen the dignity of the community while also serving as an investment in the future of children and families," he said.

During the event, the Deli Serdang Regency Government also symbolically handed over portable fire extinguishers (APAR) for four locations in slum settlements. Waste bins were also distributed to raise public awareness and encourage greater community involvement in maintaining a clean residential environment.

The distribution of these facilities is intended to support residents' efforts to maintain the improvements that have already been made. The government also urged residents to work together to preserve the condition of the surrounding environment so that the improvements achieved would not be lost.

River Regulation Remains a Priority

Asri assured residents that the government would continue to address remaining infrastructure needs in Kampung Berkah Syahmad. Residents were given the opportunity to submit proposals concerning unresolved problems in their living environment.

"Residents' suggestions will certainly be taken into consideration. These include river regulation and the need for riverbank reinforcement using gabions. River regulation will be carried out once our heavy equipment has completed its flood-control work in Hamparan Perak," he said.

The proposed river regulation and construction of gabions are among the residents' concerns because they are closely related to the condition of the residential environment and the risk of flooding during rainfall. The Deli Serdang Regency Government plans to follow up on these needs after its heavy equipment completes flood-control operations in the Hamparan Perak area.

The inauguration of Kampung Berkah Syahmad therefore does not mark the end of efforts to address slum settlements. Instead, the Deli Serdang Regency Government is preparing to gradually revitalize other areas that remain in the same category.

Asri Ludin said that eight more slum areas are scheduled to be revitalized next year. The program is part of the government's efforts to expand improvements in the quality of residential areas and ensure that residents have access to more adequate housing.

Residents Feel the Concrete Benefits

Asri Ludin also reminded residents to jointly maintain the facilities provided by the government and the improvements that have already been implemented. In his view, the sustainability of the area revitalization program depends heavily on community involvement in maintaining the residential environment.

"I hope that everything that has been built and improved will be maintained together. Kampung Berkah belongs to the community and is intended for the community," he added.

For the beneficiaries, the program has brought tangible changes to their living conditions. One of the recipients of the renovation program, Usman, who belongs to the lowest socioeconomic group, Decile 1, expressed his gratitude to the Deli Serdang Regency Government for the assistance he received.

"Thank you to the Regent and the government for helping us improve our house," he said.

Another resident, Sri Wahyuni, has also felt the changes following the revitalization of the area. She said that the condition of her residential environment has improved significantly, particularly during rainy weather.

"We live here now and it is no longer muddy. We also hope that the river will be regulated and reinforced with gabions," she said.

The changes show that the revitalization of the area has not only affected the physical condition of the houses but has also improved residents' comfort in carrying out their daily activities. Better drainage, sanitation, waste management and improvements to the residential environment are important components in ensuring sustainable improvements in housing conditions.

The Deli Serdang Regency Government is now expected to continue the gradual revitalization of other slum areas while taking into account the specific needs of each region. Community participation in maintaining the facilities that have been provided will also remain a decisive factor in ensuring that the revitalized areas remain healthy, safe, comfortable and livable in the long term.
