IMPORTANT ROLE OF EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING: The Chairperson of TP PKK Medan, Airin Rico Waas, emphasizes the importance of breastfeeding in preventing stunting during a seminar at RSIA Stella Maris on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM The Chairperson of the Family Welfare Empowerment Team (TP PKK) of Medan City, Airin Rico Waas, has emphasized the importance of exclusive breastfeeding (ASI eksklusif) as a fundamental step in building a healthy, intelligent, and stunting-free generation.

She delivered the statement during a public seminar and workshop themed "Exclusive Breastfeeding for a Healthy and Intelligent Generation" held at RSIA Stella Maris Mother and Child Hospital on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

The event, a collaboration between TP PKK Medan and RSIA Stella Maris, gathered 25 participants consisting of PKK cadres from five districts across Medan.

In her remarks, Airin Rico Waas encouraged mothers to prioritize exclusive breastfeeding as the first and most important investment in their children's future. She stressed that breast milk is not only a source of nutrition but also a natural protection granted to every newborn.

"The World Health Organization (WHO) states that exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months is a key factor in reducing stunting rates. This is a long-term investment in improving the quality of human resources in Medan," Airin said, accompanied by Ismiralda Wiriya Alrahman, Head of TP PKK Medan for Family Character Development, along with other officials.

Stunting Remains a Persistent Challenge in Medan

Airin also highlighted that stunting remains a serious concern in Medan. Currently, 162 out of 79,926 children under five are affected by the condition. Stunting is caused by chronic malnutrition and improper parenting practices, including the early introduction of solid foods.

She underlined that addressing this issue requires consistent education and awareness among parents to ensure proper infant nutrition practices.

Collaboration Between Families and Health Workers

Airin stressed the importance of strong cooperation between husbands, families, and healthcare professionals in supporting breastfeeding mothers. She noted that breastfeeding success depends not only on physical readiness but also on emotional stability.

She also appreciated the presence of lactation counselors at the event who provided practical guidance for mothers facing breastfeeding challenges.

"This program aligns with the vision of a more inclusive, progressive, and sustainable Medan Bertuah. We hope continuous education will eliminate doubts and concerns among mothers regarding breastfeeding," she added.

Meanwhile, the Director of RSIA Stella Maris, Dr. Saiful Ramadhan, stated that the program aims to improve mothers' understanding and skills in optimizing breastfeeding practices.

He also expressed hope that PKK cadres would not only benefit personally but also pass on the knowledge to communities.
