Aceh PKK Promotes Home Gardens to Strengthen Food Security

YARD UTILIZATION: The Chair of the Expert Staff of TP-PKK Aceh, Mukarramah Fadhlullah, opens a TP-PKK Aceh Working Group III program on the utilization of home yards as a source of family food security at Hotel Kumala, Banda Aceh.

BANDA ACEH | INDATANEWS.COM ~ The Head of the Expert Staff of the Aceh Family Welfare Empowerment Team (TP-PKK Aceh), Mukarramah Fadhlullah, together with Iskandar, Head of the Aceh Community and Gampong Development Agency, officially opened the TP-PKK Aceh Working Group III (Pokja III) program titled "Aku Hatinya PKK: Utilizing Home Gardens as a Source of Family Food Security." The event was held on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at Hotel Kumala in Banda Aceh.

Strengthening Family Food Security

Mukarramah Fadhlullah urged the public to maximize the use of home gardens as a strategic step to strengthen household food security amid economic uncertainty and potential food supply challenges. She stressed that food security is a basic human need that directly impacts quality of life and must begin at the family level, where women play a key role in maintaining nutrition and wellbeing.

Home Gardens for Self-Reliance

Through the "Aku Hatinya PKK" initiative, communities are encouraged to optimize available land around their homes to grow vegetables, chilies, fruit trees, and medicinal plants. The program also highlights the potential of small-scale livestock and fish farming to improve household income and promote greater self-sufficiency.

Mukarramah further emphasized that home gardens contribute to improved public health and nutrition, particularly in reducing stunting rates. Reflecting on Aceh's experience with natural disasters, she noted that household food resilience is crucial in times of crisis.

"Even a small garden, if well managed, can significantly support family food security," she said.

She concluded by calling for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to build a healthier, more resilient future generation through increased community participation in family-based food security programs. (IDNC)
