MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - The 54th anniversary of the Family Welfare Movement Unity Day (HKG PKK) at the Medan city level served as an important moment for the Medan City Government to strengthen the role of the Family Welfare Empowerment Team (TP PKK) in supporting family and community development. The Medan City Government reaffirmed its full commitment to implementing the PKK's 10 core programs so they can be more targeted and deliver tangible benefits to the community.

Medan Mayor Rico Waas made the statement during the 54th HKG PKK anniversary celebration at the Medan Petisah PKK Building on Thursday, August 13, 2026. Also attending the event were Chairwoman of the Medan City TP PKK Airin Rico Waas, PKK expert Ny. Martinijal Zakiyuddin Harahap, a number of heads of city government agencies, subdistrict heads, and members of the Medan City TP PKK.

Rico Waas emphasized that the PKK's 10 core programs are closely linked to the government's efforts to improve public welfare. The programs cover a range of strategic areas, including health, education, nutrition, family empowerment, and strengthening the economic well-being of the community.

For this reason, he called on the Medan City TP PKK to plan its programs in a more targeted and measurable manner while taking into account the needs of the community. Rico also urged the TP PKK to strengthen coordination with the city government's Regional Apparatus Organizations (OPD) and the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), so that PKK programs can be integrated into Medan's development planning.

"We want to strengthen the PKK's role going forward. Let us prepare an increasingly solid work system and work program. Bring the planned programs to Bappeda so that we can prepare even better PKK programs for the coming years. We will fully support them," Rico Waas emphasized.

Strengthening Health Programs and Preventing Stunting

On the occasion, Rico Waas specifically called on the TP PKK to strengthen health programs, particularly the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding and the prevention of stunting among children. According to data available to the Medan City Government, the exclusive breastfeeding rate in the second quarter of 2026 stood at 80.54 percent.

Meanwhile, a total of 107,143 toddlers were weighed in June 2026. The Medan City Government identified growth disorders in 104 children, resulting in a stunting prevalence rate of 0.11 percent.

Rico emphasized that stunting prevention must begin during pregnancy. In his view, ensuring adequate nutrition for pregnant women and providing education on healthy diets are important measures to support children's development from the earliest stages of life.

He also called on each working group (Pokja) within the TP PKK to carry out its respective role optimally in accordance with its responsibilities. Strengthening Pancasila values and the spirit of mutual cooperation, education, the development of family-based MSMEs, healthy eating campaigns, and increased use of local products are among the areas requiring particular attention.

Rico hopes that the implementation of these programs will not focus solely on measurable results, but will also adopt a more people-centered approach. He urged PKK cadres to establish more humane communication so that each program can genuinely address the problems faced by families.

"My hope is that this will enable us to reach mothers more strongly and directly. We must strengthen the humanistic approach and move even closer to the community," he said.

Airin Calls for Greater Innovation in PKK

Chairwoman of the Medan City TP PKK Airin Rico Waas said the 54th HKG PKK anniversary was an appropriate moment to evaluate the development of the PKK movement while strengthening the commitment of all cadres. She expressed hope that the PKK would continue to develop into an active, innovative, and adaptable organization that delivers tangible benefits to the community.

"For 54 years, the PKK has been an important part of family and community development. Therefore, we should make the family the center of change and PKK cadres the driving force behind it," Airin said.

Airin emphasized that successful implementation of the PKK's 10 core programs requires cooperation among various stakeholders. The TP PKK cannot work alone and therefore needs to build partnerships with the Medan City Government, government agencies, subdistricts, urban villages, businesses, community organizations, and all segments of society.

In addition to strengthening cooperation, Airin called on PKK cadres to remain open to technological developments. Cadres must also improve their creativity in communication, build broader networks, and provide opportunities for the younger generation to participate in various PKK activities.

According to Airin, youth participation is important to ensure that the PKK movement keeps pace with changing times without abandoning its original goal of empowering families. Through an adaptable approach, she hopes cadres can reach more people and offer solutions to various family-related challenges.

The 54th HKG PKK anniversary celebration was held in a festive atmosphere. Airin added to the celebration by cutting a traditional tumpeng rice cone and a cake. The event became even livelier when Mayor Rico Waas and the chairwoman of the Medan City TP PKK sang together in front of the cadres.

Afterward, Airin called on all cadres to maintain unity and the spirit of mutual cooperation. She expressed hope that PKK cadres would continue to be present at the heart of the community and provide concrete programs and solutions to meet families' needs.

"Happy 54th HKG PKK anniversary. Let us strengthen the PKK's 10 core programs, implement the Asta Cita goals, and realize a Golden Indonesia 2045," Airin said.
