DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM The Medan Class A Search and Rescue (SAR) team, together with a joint SAR unit, successfully located an eight-year-old girl who had been reported missing in the Kabero River, Desa Lama, Pancur Batu District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra. The child was later found dead and evacuated from the scene.

The victim, identified as Aulia Kaisa Azzahra (8), went missing on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at around 2:00 p.m. WIB after being swept away by a strong river current while swimming with friends.

Village head Nizar Laksamana Tarigan promptly reported the incident to the Medan SAR Command at 3:25 p.m. WIB. Following the alert, a rescue team was immediately deployed to the location to begin search and rescue operations.

A total of seven personnel were mobilized to the site and coordinated closely with other SAR elements to maximize the effectiveness of the mission.

Search Divided into Two Units

After an initial assessment and briefing, the rescue operation was divided into two Search and Rescue Units (SRU) to accelerate the search process.

One unit conducted a downstream sweep of the Kabero River using a rafting boat and the Aqua Eye underwater detection system, while the second unit carried out land-based searches along the riverbanks.

Medan SAR Class A Commander Hery Marantika, who served as Search Mission Coordinator (SMC), said the operation was carried out swiftly and in an organized manner while prioritizing safety.

"Once the information was received, the rescue team was immediately deployed. The search was conducted both on the water surface using Aqua Eye and through systematic shoreline searches," he said.

Victim Found Near Incident Site

After several hours of intensive searching, the girl was found at 4:55 p.m. WIB not far from the original incident location. Authorities confirmed that she had already died when she was recovered.

"The victim was found near the initial accident site and was subsequently evacuated. The family was accompanied, and we extend our deepest condolences," he added.

The body was transported to RS U Pancur Batu for further examination and was accompanied by family members.

The operation involved the Medan SAR team, Pancur Batu Police, local government officials, residents, and the victim's family. Equipment used included rescue vehicles, rafting boats, Aqua Eye devices, water rescue gear, medical equipment, communication tools, personal protective equipment, and body bags.
