Two Street Robbery Suspects Arrested in Batam, Police Recover iPhone 13

ARREST OF STREET ROBBERY SUSPECTS: Barelang Police arrested two alleged street robbers involved in the theft of two mobile phones in Sei Beduk, Batam. Police secured an iPhone 13, an Infinix Hot 11 Play, and the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime.

The case was officially revealed during a press conference held at the Barelang Police Headquarters lobby on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

The press conference was led by Head of Criminal Investigation Unit Kompol M. Debby Tri Andrestian, accompanied by Police Public Relations Officer AKP Budi Santosa, Head of Tipidter Unit Iptu M. Alvin Royantara, Kasubnit 8 Iptu Maryo Sandro Putra Siahaan, and investigators from Sei Beduk Police Sector.

According to Kompol M. Debby Tri Andrestian, the robbery occurred on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at around 8:20 p.m. local time. The victim, identified by the initials PSR (23), was riding a motorcycle with his companion, NAP (22), in the Pintu 5 Batamindo area.

PSR was sitting as a passenger while NAP was driving the motorcycle. During the trip, they realized they were being followed by two unidentified men riding a white Honda Scoopy motorcycle.

"The victims noticed they were being followed by two unknown men riding a white Honda Scoopy motorcycle," Kompol M. Debby Tri Andrestian said.

Moments later, the suspects approached from the left side of the victims' motorcycle. The passenger of the suspect's motorcycle then grabbed two smartphones from the victim's hoodie pocket.

The stolen items included an Exploratory Blue Infinix Hot 11 Play and an iPhone 13 Starlight.

After carrying out the robbery, the suspects fled toward Simpang Panbil. The victims attempted to chase them but eventually lost track of the perpetrators.

Following the report, the Jatanras Unit of Barelang Criminal Investigation Unit, together with officers from Sei Beduk Police Sector, launched an intensive investigation.

Police later received information regarding the suspects' whereabouts in the Punggur area.

On Monday, May 4, 2026, at approximately 5:50 p.m., officers arrested two suspects identified by the initials RTS (20) and SSL (19). During initial questioning, both suspects admitted to committing the robbery.

Investigators also confiscated several pieces of evidence, including the victims' two smartphones along with their boxes, and the white Honda Scoopy motorcycle allegedly used during the crime.

According to investigators, the suspects deliberately searched for potential victims in the Sei Beduk area. RTS reportedly acted as the motorcycle rider, while SSL snatched valuables from victims.

"The suspects followed the victims from behind before stealing two smartphones from the victim's hoodie pocket without resistance," Kompol M. Debby Tri Andrestian explained.

Police Urge Public To Remain Vigilant

The robbery caused the victims material losses estimated at approximately Rp9.1 million.

The two suspects have been charged under Article 477 Paragraph 1 Letter G of the Indonesian Criminal Code concerning theft committed jointly.

If convicted, the suspects face a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment or a Category V fine.

Kompol M. Debby Tri Andrestian urged the public to remain cautious while traveling, especially when carrying valuables, and advised residents not to store expensive items in visible places.

Barelang Police also announced increased patrols and stricter measures against street crime in an effort to maintain public safety in Batam.

In addition, the public is encouraged to immediately report criminal acts or public disturbances through the toll-free police emergency hotline 110, which operates 24 hours a day. (IDNC)
