MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM – The Medan municipal government has stepped up efforts to improve the management of public assets, with Mayor Rico Waas reaffirming his commitment to ensuring that all city-owned properties are utilized optimally, productively, and no longer left idle without clear function.
The statement was delivered during a continuation meeting on the enforcement of the city's
asset management order held with the Special Committee (Pansus) of the
Medan City Council at
Medan City Hall. During the meeting, Waas urged all relevant departments to accelerate the identification, structuring, and utilization of underused municipal assets.
Optimizing Efficiency Through Idle Asset Utilization
Waas emphasized that public assets should not merely be seen as administrative inventory, but as strategic instruments to improve
budget efficiency and enhance public service delivery. He stressed that no government asset should remain unproductive for an extended period.
"I want all our assets to function properly. There should be no idle resources. All measures must be implemented this year," Waas stated at City Hall on Monday (June 8, 2026).
Cost Efficiency and Smarter Use of Existing Resources
Addressing the Chairman of the Asset Management Special Committee, Robi Barus, along with other council members, Waas highlighted the importance of fiscal discipline amid Medan's ongoing development projects.
He criticized the practice of renting external facilities when the city already possesses usable assets, urging that internal resources must be prioritized before any new procurement decisions are made.
"No new purchases if suitable assets already exist. That is wasteful. We must reduce costs," he said.
Transparent Disposal and Asset Reallocation
Waas also drew attention to non-functional assets such as neglected official vehicles and unusable equipment. He stated that these assets must be promptly processed in accordance with applicable regulations.
He further emphasized that all auction processes must be conducted openly, transparently, and in compliance with legal standards to ensure accountability in public administration.
"Unused items can be auctioned immediately—of course, in accordance with regulations," Waas noted.
Strengthening Executive–Legislative Cooperation
At the conclusion of the meeting, Waas praised the collaboration between the executive branch and the
Medan City Council, particularly the Special Committee on
asset management. He noted that close coordination is essential for sustainable improvements in governance.
He also requested that all committee findings and recommendations be formalized into official resolutions to ensure swift implementation.
"This dialogue is intended to ensure our assets are used optimally. All council recommendations will be taken seriously," Waas concluded.
Committee Chairman Robi Barus welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the importance of modern
asset management. Study visits to Bandung and Jakarta showed that Jakarta, in particular, serves as a benchmark due to its digital asset tracking and transparent governance system.
