MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - Medan City Council member Rommy Van Boy has called on residents to strengthen social cohesion and put the values of Pancasila into practice in their daily lives. Speaking at an event promoting Pancasila ideology and national awareness in Medan Polonia, Rommy also reminded parents to pay closer attention to their children's social interactions and use of social media.
Rommy made the statement during an event promoting Pancasila ideology and national awareness on Jalan Starban, Polonia Subdistrict, Medan, on Sunday, August 9, 2026. Hundreds of residents attended the fourth national awareness event, including students, religious representatives, youth representatives and members of the wider community.On the occasion, Rommy said technological developments and the influence of various foreign cultures could affect children's social interactions and development. He urged parents not to neglect supervision of their children, particularly when they use mobile phones and access various types of content through social media.
"If we have children, please pay attention to their social interactions. Today, foreign cultures and the development of social media have a very strong influence on the development of our children," Rommy said.Rommy also addressed the issue of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender, or LGBT. He expressed the view that such behavior was contrary to the religious values and social norms upheld by the community. He therefore called on families to play an active role in providing children with guidance and understanding in dealing with social interactions and social media.
According to Rommy, parental supervision should not merely involve restricting the use of electronic devices, but should also be carried out through guidance and communication. Parents need to know what content their children consume so that families can provide guidance based on their religious values and social norms.According to Rommy, the first principle also teaches people to respect religious freedom, recognize differences in religion and belief, and maintain tolerance among religious communities. He reminded residents not to turn differences in faith into a reason for hostility toward one another.
"There should no longer be religious differences that divide us. Religion is a matter between us and God," Rommy said.The second principle, "Just and Civilized Humanity," teaches people to recognize the equality of all human beings, respect one another, show consideration for others and refrain from treating others arbitrarily.
The Golkar faction member of the Medan City Council said humanitarian values could be put into practice through mutual assistance, community cooperation, standing up for truth and justice, and respecting the rights of others.Rommy also emphasized the importance of the third principle, "The Unity of Indonesia." In his view, the principle instills national awareness and love for the homeland while reminding people to place the interests of the nation above personal or group interests.
As chairman of the Medan Polonia Subdistrict branch of Pemuda Pancasila, Rommy reminded residents not to be easily provoked by issues that could threaten social cohesion. Differences in ethnicity, religion, race and social groups, he said, should serve as a strength for the nation rather than become a source of conflict."At its core, this is about national awareness and love for the homeland. We must be willing to make sacrifices for the nation, be proud to be Indonesians, and preserve unity despite all our differences," he said.
He urged residents to respect the outcomes of collective deliberations, exercise their voting rights in elections and refrain from imposing their will on others. In Rommy's view, different political choices are a normal part of democratic life. People should therefore not sever their relationships with one another simply because they have different political preferences.
"During elections, whether legislative elections or the presidential election, we must not allow ourselves to be easily divided. Everyone has their own choice. Exercise your voting rights because it is your right, ladies and gentlemen, and no one may pressure or force you," he said.In connection with democratic life, Rommy also urged residents to exercise their political rights responsibly. He reminded the public not to be easily influenced by particular political parties and to respect the political choices made by every citizen.
The fifth principle, "Social Justice for All Indonesian People," teaches people, according to Rommy, to act fairly, maintain a balance between rights and responsibilities, respect the rights of others, and develop an attitude of hard work and mutual cooperation.Rommy said consistent implementation of all five Pancasila principles could help build a just, prosperous and harmonious society. He emphasized that all citizens have equal rights and responsibilities.
"As a society and as Indonesian citizens, we have equal rights and responsibilities. Under the fundamental principles of state law, there are no differences in the status of citizens," he emphasized.
In addition to delivering material on Pancasila and national awareness, Rommy concluded the event with a question-and-answer session. The session tested residents' understanding of Pancasila, social unity, tolerance and national awareness.
A total of 10 residents successfully answered the questions. The award recipients were predominantly elementary, junior high and senior high school students, as well as members of the general public.The Sahabat Rommy Van Boy team, together with Pemuda Pancasila from Polonia, subsequently presented awards to participants who successfully answered the questions. Rommy also distributed school supplies, including books, stationery and other learning materials, to students.
The distribution of school supplies reflected Rommy's support for the younger generation so they can study with greater enthusiasm and pursue their aspirations. He hopes students will not only understand Pancasila theoretically but also apply its values at home, at school and within society.The event was part of Rommy's ongoing efforts to promote Pancasila and national awareness among the public. He previously held a similar event at the SMP Islam Al-Fadhli school grounds on Jalan Eka Bakti, Gedung Johor Subdistrict, Medan Johor, on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
At that event, Rommy called on residents to strengthen tolerance among religious communities and apply Pancasila values in their daily lives. He also emphasized that diversity is a strength of the nation that must be preserved through mutual respect and by prioritizing unity.Through the events promoting Pancasila ideology and national awareness, Rommy hopes residents will increasingly understand the importance of preserving unity amid social diversity. At the same time, he called on families, particularly parents, to play an active role in shaping the character of the younger generation so they grow up with an understanding of religious and national values, as well as respect for their fellow citizens.
