BINJAI | INDATANEWS.COM Deputy Governor of North Sumatra, Surya, has highlighted Binjai's 154th anniversary as a pivotal moment to strengthen optimism and accelerate regional development. He emphasized the city's strong potential to evolve into a modern and competitive buffer city in North Sumatra.

Surya delivered the remarks during the 154th anniversary celebration of Binjai City held at Pendopo Umar Baki, Binjai, on Sunday (17/05/2026). He noted that the city has shown consistent progress across multiple sectors, reflecting a positive development trajectory.

According to Surya, Binjai is currently experiencing stable economic growth, improved public services, strengthened digital governance, and continuous development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Human resource development also remains a key priority for the local government.

"Binjai City is currently showing very positive progress. Economic growth is stable, public services continue to improve, digital administration is being strengthened, SMEs are expanding, and human capital development is a major focus of the local government," Surya said.

Surya stressed that this year's theme, "Moving Forward to Create a Prosperous Binjai," should not remain a slogan, but serve as a concrete direction for development programs that directly benefit the community.

He also highlighted Binjai's historical background, noting its origin around the Bingai River area, which later developed into an important trade corridor for the Malay community and now stands as a strategic city in North Sumatra.

To address development challenges, Surya called for stronger human resource quality, improved public services, accelerated infrastructure development, and the empowerment of local communities through SMEs and the creative economy.

These efforts include improved healthcare services, stunting reduction programs, free nutritious school meals, enhanced education access, and broader community economic empowerment initiatives.

Meanwhile, Binjai Mayor Amir Hamzah stated that the city's 154-year journey has been marked by significant transformation and development.

"We extend our gratitude to all parties—government institutions, the military, police, private sector, academics, and civil society—for their dedication and collaboration in building Binjai City," Amir said.
