MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - North Sumatra Deputy Governor Surya has called on the newly elected board of the Association of Young Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals (Ikatan Cendekiawan Muslim Indonesia Muda/ICMI Muda) in North Sumatra to carry out the mandate entrusted to them responsibly and make concrete contributions that benefit the community.
Surya made the statement during the inauguration of the new board of the North Sumatra Regional Leadership Council (Majelis Pengurus Wilayah/MPW) of ICMI Muda at the Raja Inal Siregar Hall, Jalan Diponegoro No. 30, Medan, on Saturday, September 5, 2026.The Central Leadership Council of ICMI (Majelis Pimpinan Pusat/MPP) formally installed Ilham Suheri Situmorang as chairman of the North Sumatra MPW ICMI Muda. Raden M. Khalid Prabowo was appointed secretary-general, while Kahfi Aulia was named treasurer.
Surya reminded the new board that the inauguration should not be viewed merely as a ceremonial event. He urged all board members to demonstrate their commitment through concrete work and programs that respond to the needs of the community."This is not merely a ceremony. You must fulfill the mandate entrusted to you and show commitment and responsibility from the very beginning. Most importantly, however, you must demonstrate concrete contributions," Surya said during the inauguration at the Raja Inal Siregar Hall, Jalan Diponegoro No. 30, Medan, on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
Surya emphasized that the younger generation holds an important position in advancing North Sumatra. Therefore, he urged ICMI Muda North Sumatra to play a greater role in regional development through ideas, innovations, and activities capable of addressing problems faced by the community.
According to Surya, it is not enough for young intellectuals to possess academic abilities alone. They must also translate their knowledge and ideas into concrete actions that have a positive impact on the communities around them.He expressed hope that ICMI Muda North Sumatra could become a driving force for regional development while also serving as a role model for other young people across the province. The organization, he added, should provide a platform for collaboration among young people to develop ideas that respond to the demands and changes of the times.
Surya said the challenges facing the younger generation have become increasingly complex. Technological transformation is advancing rapidly, while global economic dynamics are affecting various aspects of people's lives. The development of artificial intelligence (AI) is also bringing significant changes to education, the workplace, the economy, and social life."Technological developments, global economic dynamics, AI, wars, and other developments—these challenges must be addressed together. As young people, you, as intellectuals, must produce innovations and new ideas," Surya said.
He believes these various changes require a swift and appropriate response from the younger generation. Young intellectuals have the ability to develop new innovations and ideas that not only keep pace with the changing times but also address the needs of people in North Sumatra.Surya also called on ICMI Muda North Sumatra to strengthen communication and cooperation with the regional government, universities, youth organizations, and various community groups. Such collaboration, he said, is essential to turn the ideas of young intellectuals into programs that provide tangible benefits to society.
According to Suheri, the organization under his leadership intends to contribute to efforts to combat and curb drug abuse. At the same time, he acknowledged that the problem is broad in scope and therefore requires the involvement of many stakeholders.
"We are among the regions with the highest levels of drug abuse. We want drugs to be genuinely fought and contained. Of course, we cannot do this alone; we must work together with all parties," Suheri said.Suheri stressed that ICMI Muda North Sumatra cannot tackle the drug problem on its own. He called for cooperation with the government, law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, community organizations, families, and other sectors of society.
In his view, efforts to address drug abuse must directly involve the younger generation. In addition to supporting drug prevention and enforcement measures, the organization can help raise public awareness about the dangers of drugs and create an environment that protects young people from the abuse of illicit substances.
The inauguration of the new North Sumatra MPW ICMI Muda board also served as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between the young intellectuals' organization and various stakeholders across North Sumatra.
The presence of representatives from the regional government, the Regional Legislative Council, the North Sumatra Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forum Koordinasi Pimpinan Daerah/Forkopimda), universities, and various organizations underscored the importance of collaboration in implementing youth programs and supporting regional development.Also attending the inauguration were Chairman of the MPP ICMI Muda Presidium Tumpal Panggabean, North Sumatra Regional Legislative Council member Defri Noval Pasaribu, and representatives of the North Sumatra Forkopimda.
Binjai Deputy Mayor Hasanul Jihadi was also present, along with leaders of universities across North Sumatra and relevant agencies of the North Sumatra regional government.With the new board in place, ICMI Muda North Sumatra is expected not to limit itself to internal and ceremonial activities but to produce programs that respond to the problems and needs of society. This expectation is in line with the government's call for the younger generation to play a strategic role in addressing technological change, economic challenges, and various social problems.
The new North Sumatra MPW ICMI Muda board also has an opportunity to make the fight against drug abuse a concrete contribution to the region. Through cross-sector collaboration and greater involvement of the younger generation, the organization is expected to produce both ideas and concrete actions that benefit the people of North Sumatra.
