DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM ~ The Deli Serdang Regency government has designated Percut Village as a pilot site for stunting intervention and slum area improvement. The initiative aims to serve as a model for integrated interventions across the region.
Combating Stunting Through Environmental Improvement
Regent Asri Ludin Tambunan emphasized that tackling stunting must be accompanied by improvements in residents' living conditions. Percut Village in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, Indonesia, was chosen as the starting point for comprehensive interventions, ranging from housing renovations and access to clean water and sanitation to upgrading basic infrastructure.

"We selected Percut as a pilot area for stunting intervention and slum development. This will become a model for the entire Deli Serdang Regency," he stated during a sunbathing activity on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, in Kecamatan Percut Sei Tuan.
So far, one uninhabitable house has been successfully renovated in less than two months since the groundbreaking in February 2026. Construction has also begun on three additional houses of uniform size 6x7 meters. In addition, local roads are being upgraded, and a bore well for clean water is being built, which will be managed by the village-owned enterprise (BUMDes) to ensure long-term sustainability.

Social Support for Low-Income Communities
The program targets low-income families to ensure they directly benefit from improved living conditions. Regent Tambunan also encouraged Baznas to provide incentives for the lowest-income residents.

"For those who do not receive central government social assistance, we provide help through the local government. Baznas can also use its funds to offer incentives, helping residents in the lowest income decile to improve their standard of living," he explained.
Plans are also underway to deploy sand suction equipment for river mouth normalization and encourage community support for river widening. These measures aim to reduce flood risks while boosting productivity in coastal areas.

Percut Village is also planned to host the Merah Putih Fishermen Cooperative, strengthening the local coastal economy. Through these integrated programs, the Regency government hopes to transform Percut from a disadvantaged area into a progressive, healthy, and prosperous community.

The sunbathing event, attended by Jelita Asri Ludin Tambunan, Chair of TP PKK Deli Serdang, included a symbolic distribution of Upah Pungut (UP) to sub-district heads, village chiefs, and community leaders. (IDNC)
