BATAM | INDATANEWS.COM - The Class IIA Batam Correctional Facility (Lapas Kelas IIA Batam) granted special remission to Buddhist inmates on Sunday, May 31, 2026, in observance of Waisak 2570 BE. The initiative is part of the institution's broader efforts in inmate rehabilitation and the protection of prisoners' rights.
Out of 25 Buddhist inmates, 15 received Remisi Khusus I, a partial sentence reduction awarded in recognition of good behavior and active participation in rehabilitation and development programs within the facility.
Waisak as a Moment of Reflection
Waisak provides a spiritual opportunity for Buddhist inmates to reflect on their lives and personal transformation. During the observance, values such as peace, tolerance, self-control, and the commitment to change are reinforced throughout the correctional environment.The 2026 Waisak theme, "Dharma Preserves World Peace," encourages individuals to deepen their understanding of Buddhist teachings and apply them consistently in daily life.
The Head of Lapas Batam, Yosafat Rizanto, emphasized that remission is not merely a reduction of sentence but also a form of state recognition for discipline and commitment shown by inmates during rehabilitation programs.
"This remission is intended to motivate inmates to continue improving themselves, strengthen discipline, and prepare for a better life in society," he stated.He also highlighted that Waisak serves as an important moment to strengthen tolerance, peace, and positive behavioral change within the correctional environment.
Humanitarian Correctional Reform in BatamLapas Batam reaffirmed its commitment to a humane, fair, and socially reintegrative correctional system. Through sustainable development programs, the institution aims to support inmates in successfully reintegrating into society upon release. (IDNC)
