MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - North Sumatra Governor, Bobby Nasution, praised the support from Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), which is pushing for the Pekan Raya Sumatera Utara (PRSU) to be included in the Ministry of Tourism's national event calendar. The support was conveyed during a specific working visit by Commission VII DPR RI to the 50th anniversary celebration of PRSU in Medan on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
Bobby stated that the inclusion of PRSU in the national event calendar would strengthen the promotion of culture, tourism, and the creative economy in North Sumatra. According to him, PRSU has significant potential because it brings together cultural diversity and various regional superior products on one integrated platform. He described PRSU as a space that brings together the potential of human resources, cultural heritage, and the creative economy developed by the people of North Sumatra.
"In other regions, perhaps only one type of dance is showcased, while in North Sumatra at least five ethnic groups are represented through traditional clothing, cultural parades, and dances. This diversity is a major potential to strengthen culture, human resources, and the economy," Bobby said.
Bobby hopes the central government, through the Ministry of Tourism, will officially designate PRSU as one of Indonesia's national events. He believes the move would provide North Sumatra with greater opportunities to showcase its cultural wealth while increasing economic activities for local communities.
He also called on all regency and city governments across North Sumatra to jointly strengthen the implementation of PRSU and set aside sectoral interests. Regional pavilions, he said, should be utilized optimally to introduce the potential of each area to the wider public."There should be no regional egoism. The pavilions are already available, but they are not opened or utilized to introduce each region to the public," he said.
Bobby emphasized that the success of PRSU would not only belong to the North Sumatra Provincial Government or the governor but would represent the achievement of the entire North Sumatran community. He believes that once included in the national event calendar, PRSU can become a driving force for regional economic growth in the cultural and tourism sectors. After meeting with Commission VII DPR RI, Bobby and the delegation visited several regency and city pavilions, including those representing Asahan, Karo, and Deli Serdang.

According to Evita, PRSU should not remain merely an annual entertainment event but must evolve into a platform with broader economic and social impacts. She sees significant opportunities for PRSU to become a center for promoting culture, micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM), the creative economy, and tourism in North Sumatra.
"I see great enthusiasm to develop PRSU not only as entertainment but as a platform with comprehensive economic and social impacts. PRSU must become a showcase for culture, UMKM, the creative economy, as well as a medium to promote tourism and regional potential," Evita said. She explained that PRSU has developed into a platform for culture, tourism, UMKM, and the creative economy, involving all regencies and cities in North Sumatra. The participation of Penang, Malaysia, also demonstrates PRSU's potential to grow into an event with broader international reach.
Evita proposed the development of a comprehensive PRSU roadmap for the next five to ten years. Long-term planning is needed so that PRSU can evolve into a center for exhibitions, trade, arts, culture, and the creative economy capable of attracting tourists, buyers, and investors from Indonesia and abroad. She also suggested the construction of a dedicated tourism pavilion and the opening of participation opportunities for UMKM from other regions. According to her, Commission VII DPR RI is ready to strengthen cooperation with relevant ministries so PRSU can receive support from the central government.
"In the future, PRSU must develop into a center for exhibitions, trade, arts, culture, and the creative economy that can attract buyers and investors from overseas. This requires collaboration from all stakeholders because this development cannot be achieved alone," she said.Very explained that the 50th PRSU features 33 regency and city pavilions as well as one pavilion representing a friendly country. He said all event activities were organized without using the regional budget (APBD) but through a partnership funding model.
"Seventy-five percent of the event content is created by local talents. This reflects our commitment to making PRSU the main stage for local artists, cultural practitioners, and creative economy players," Very said.He added that organizational transformations continue to be carried out by considering various public inputs. Improvements include ticket pricing, service quality, parking management, and visitor comfort.
Very hopes that these innovations will make PRSU a more attractive event and create economic benefits for the people of North Sumatra. With support from various parties, PRSU is expected to develop into a cultural, trade, and creative economy center with national and international appeal.
