MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM – The Provincial Government of North Sumatra is accelerating its waste-to-energy development program through the construction of the Medan Raya Waste-to-Energy Power Plant (PSEL). The strategic project is set to enter the tender phase following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the provincial government and Danantara, with groundbreaking scheduled for 2026.
Head of the North Sumatra Environment and Forestry Agency, Heri Wahyudi Marpaung, said Governor Bobby Nasution is targeting the project's tender process in May 2026, followed by the official groundbreaking in the same year.He made the statement during a press briefing held by the North Sumatra Communication and Information Office at the Dekranasda lobby, Governor's Office, Jalan Diponegoro, Medan, on Friday (May 22, 2026).

Push for Sustainable Waste-to-Energy Solution

Medan City and Deli Serdang Regency have both confirmed their commitment to supplying the required waste volume for the facility's operations.
"Governor Bobby Nasution initiated this program, and both Medan and Deli Serdang have agreed to provide the required waste quota," he added.
Capacity of Up to 1,700 Tons of Waste per DayThe planned PSEL facility in Terjun Subdistrict, Medan City, will process between 1,200 and 1,700 tons of waste daily. Of this total, 1,200 tons will come from Medan City and 500 tons from Deli Serdang Regency. The facility will process both organic and inorganic waste.

To support the project, the Terjun landfill area has been expanded from five to nine hectares to accommodate the required infrastructure for the PSEL development.

Once operational, the facility is expected to generate up to 15 megawatts of electricity, which will be supplied to the state electricity company PLN. The provincial government is also preparing supporting infrastructure, including a water supply capacity of 1,000 cubic meters per day from PDAM Tirtanadi. (IDNC)
