DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM- The Family Welfare Movement (PKK) team of Deli Serdang Regency held an information session on the "7 Habits of Great Indonesian Children" at TK Negeri I Atap 02 in Lubuk Pakam on Monday, September 7, 2026. The event was part of the "PKK Goes to School" program, which aims to strengthen character, promote balanced nutrition and physical activity, and foster a strong reading culture from an early age.

The interactive event was attended by students, parents and educators. Through the program, PKK Deli Serdang is encouraging schools and families to work together in building positive habits. The development of children's character, therefore, is not expected to take place only in the classroom but also to continue in their daily lives.

Schools and Families Share Responsibility

Asniar Lom Lom Suwondo, PKK Deli Serdang Team's First Expert Adviser, emphasized that character building requires active involvement from parents. While schools can provide education and instill positive habits, families play a crucial role in ensuring that those habits are continued at home.

"Children need to be accustomed to getting up early, praying, exercising and eating nutritious food. Character building cannot be limited to the school environment; it must also be continued within the family," Asniar said during her presentation to students, parents and teachers.

She explained that simple habits practiced consistently can help children develop into disciplined, healthy and independent individuals while also learning to take social responsibility. For this reason, Asniar urged parents not to place the entire responsibility for their children's character development on schools.

Parents should serve as role models while also accompanying their children in developing positive habits. These include establishing a consistent morning routine, praying together, providing opportunities for physical activity and ensuring a diet that meets children's nutritional needs.

Asniar also reminded parents that a balanced diet does not necessarily have to be expensive. Parents can make use of a variety of readily available and relatively affordable foods to meet their children's nutritional needs.

"Eggs, tofu, tempeh, vegetables and fruit can all be included in children's daily meals. These foods can help meet children's needs for protein and fiber without requiring significant spending," she said.

On the occasion, Asniar also expressed her support for the government's Free Nutritious Meals (Makan Bergizi Gratis/MBG) program. In her view, the program can help ensure that children have access to nutritious meals regardless of their families' economic circumstances.

Adequate nutrition is an important component of children's development. A balanced intake of nutrients is not only essential for physical health but can also support children's learning activities and development throughout their school years.

Encouraging Children to Engage in Community Activities

In addition to promoting healthy lifestyles and adequate nutrition, Asniar called on parents to help develop their children's confidence and social skills. Parents should provide children with opportunities to interact with their surroundings and other people through various positive activities.

"Our children should not feel uncomfortable when they are among other members of society. On Sunday mornings, take your children exercising in parks in the city or villages. This is also a way to introduce children to life within the community," she said.

According to Asniar, simple activities in public spaces can become important learning opportunities for children. Through exercise or outdoor play, children can interact with others, become familiar with their surroundings and learn to adapt to different social situations.

These habits can also help build children's self-confidence. Parents should accompany their children without excessively restricting their freedom of movement. This allows children to learn communication, cooperation and mutual respect.

Through this approach, the "7 Habits of Great Indonesian Children" program is not only focused on developing personal habits but also on strengthening children's ability to grow and participate as members of society.

Promoting Reading Among Students

Following the information session at TK Negeri I Atap 02, Asniar continued her activities with a visit to SD Negeri 105349, a public elementary school located on the same school grounds. The visit was part of PKK Deli Serdang's commitment to developing a strong reading culture within the educational environment.

At the school, Asniar directly observed students taking part in reading activities. The activities were supported by a mobile library bus, which provides students with access to a variety of books and other reading materials.

The mobile library is one of the initiatives aimed at encouraging students' interest in reading. Access to a wide range of reading materials gives children opportunities to gain knowledge and information beyond the subjects taught in the classroom.

The observation also highlighted that developing a healthy generation with strong character must go hand in hand with improving literacy. Children need not only balanced nutrition and sufficient physical activity but also an environment that encourages them to read, learn and independently engage with knowledge.

The "PKK Goes to School" program in Deli Serdang therefore combines several of these elements through the involvement of schools, families and the wider social environment. Cooperation among all stakeholders is expected to strengthen the implementation of positive habits so that children can grow with good character, physical health, strong social skills and high motivation to learn.

The information session at TK Negeri I Atap 02 and the subsequent observation of reading activities at SD Negeri 105349 are part of PKK Deli Serdang's efforts to intensify support for children from an early age. Through consistent habits at school and at home, the positive values being promoted are expected not to remain limited to an information session but to become an integral part of children's daily lives.
