BANDA ACEH | INDATANEWS.COM - The Banda Aceh City Government and the Banda Aceh City Council (DPRK) are strengthening social protection for vulnerable workers. Through the 2026 Banda Aceh City Budget (APBK), funds have been allocated to provide employment accident and social security protection through the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan program for around 5,400 vulnerable workers.
Chairman of the Banda Aceh DPRK, Irwansyah, made the statement on Monday, June 22, 2026, during a meeting with the Head of the Banda Aceh BPJS Ketenagakerjaan Branch. He emphasized that the regional government, together with the legislative council, is committed to ensuring comprehensive protection for workers facing high occupational risks while carrying out their duties.
"Alhamdulillah, the APBK 2026 has allocated funds to provide insurance protection for more than 5,000 vulnerable workers in Banda Aceh through BPJS Ketenagakerjaan," Irwansyah said.
According to Irwansyah, seven vulnerable workers in Banda Aceh have already received benefits from the protection program during 2026. The distribution of benefits will continue until the end of the year and reflects the government's ongoing commitment to protecting working citizens.
He explained that the Banda Aceh City Government will continue expanding cooperation with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan to provide social protection for worker groups who face greater risks while earning a living for their families.
Irwansyah highlighted the importance of the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan program following several workplace accidents involving workers. One example he mentioned was the death of a worker who lost his life while installing a billboard, with the incident occurring in front of his child.
He also referred to the death of an intern who was killed in a ship engine fire involving the Aceh Hebat vessel. According to him, these individuals lost their lives while struggling to provide for their families.
Irwansyah stated that these incidents demonstrated that occupational protection is not only needed by formal employees but also by informal workers, including billboard installers, daily laborers, becak drivers, and other vulnerable occupational groups.
"If vulnerable workers such as billboard installers, laborers, or becak drivers suffer accidents and die while working, their families can receive survivor benefits of Rp42 million. This assistance can ease the burden on families left behind. In cases of illness, medical treatment costs can also be covered until recovery," he explained.
He added that social security through employment insurance provides a sense of security for workers and their families when facing workplace accidents or the loss of the main family breadwinner.

Irwansyah explained that BPJS Ketenagakerjaan operates five main programs designed to provide financial security and social protection for workers. These programs are structured to provide benefits according to risks faced throughout a worker's career until retirement.
The first program is the Employment Accident Insurance (Jaminan Kecelakaan Kerja/JKK). This program protects participants from accidents occurring during work activities, including accidents while traveling between home and the workplace. The benefits include unlimited medical treatment costs until recovery, wage replacement during work incapacity, and compensation for permanent disabilities.
The second program is the Death Benefit Insurance (Jaminan Kematian/JKM). This program provides financial assistance to the families of participants who pass away from causes unrelated to workplace accidents. The benefits include cash assistance, funeral expenses, and education scholarships for up to two children until higher education.
The Old Age Security program (Jaminan Hari Tua/JHT) provides accumulated financial benefits for workers when they reach retirement age, end their employment, or experience permanent total disability. Under certain conditions, participants may also use part of the funds for retirement preparation or housing down payments while still employed.

The fourth program is the Pension Security program (Jaminan Pensiun/JP), which aims to help workers maintain a decent standard of living during retirement or in cases of permanent total disability. Benefits are provided through regular monthly payments.
Meanwhile, the Job Loss Insurance program (Jaminan Kehilangan Pekerjaan/JKP) protects workers affected by termination of employment. The program provides financial assistance, access to labor market information, and free training to help workers obtain new employment opportunities.
Irwansyah called on all business owners in Banda Aceh who employ workers to register their employees with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan. He stressed that such protection is essential so workers can perform their duties with greater confidence and security.
He emphasized that business sectors such as cafés, hotels, coffee shops (warung kopi), and other enterprises have a responsibility to ensure their employees receive social protection.
"Therefore, we urge all entrepreneurs with employees—including owners of warung kopi, cafés, hotels, and other businesses—to register their workers with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan so they can receive protection and work more comfortably," he said.
By providing insurance protection for thousands of vulnerable workers, the Banda Aceh City Government and DPRK hope more people will receive guarantees when facing occupational risks. This program is also part of the regional government's efforts to expand social protection coverage for all groups of workers. (IDNC)
