BANDA ACEH | INDATANEWS.COM - Chairman of the Banda Aceh City Council (DPRK), Irwansyah ST, has called on all elements of society to strengthen cooperation in preventing and combating illegal drug trafficking and drug abuse. He believes the drug problem has caused serious impacts on public social life, ranging from the breakdown of family structures to increasing crime rates.
The appeal was made by Irwansyah during his participation in the socialization event on the Prevention and Eradication of Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking (P4GN) in Banda Aceh on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.Irwansyah emphasized that the drug problem cannot be solved by a single institution alone. The government, law enforcement authorities, communities, and Gampong (village) administrations must work together actively to curb the spread of illegal substances.
He specifically urged village administrations to strengthen supervision within their respective areas and to identify early signs of activities, particularly among young people, that may indicate potential drug abuse.Irwansyah stated that drug abuse has far-reaching consequences that affect not only users themselves but also their families and the surrounding social environment. Many social problems emerge when individuals fall into drug dependency.
"The impact of drug abuse is enormous, from destroying family harmony to increasing crime rates in Banda Aceh," said the young politician from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).He explained that drug dealers often use various methods to attract new users. One common tactic is offering drugs for free at the beginning to make individuals dependent on the substances.
Once users become addicted, they tend to seek money to purchase illegal drugs, sometimes through actions that violate the law."In the end, users try to find money to obtain these substances. They are willing to do anything, including committing criminal acts," Irwansyah said.
According to him, this situation is particularly concerning because many crimes uncovered in Banda Aceh involve young people. This is a generation that should be preparing for their future rather than being trapped in destructive activities."The increasing crime rate in Banda Aceh could be triggered by drug use. We see that most offenders are still young," Irwansyah said.
He pointed to several theft cases in Banda Aceh involving items that were previously rarely targeted by criminals. These included mosque donation boxes, water meters belonging to the regional water company, and water pumps.In his view, these incidents indicate the existence of more complex problems within society. The desire to obtain money quickly may be intensified by drug addiction or online gambling habits.
In addition to monitoring the social environment, Irwansyah highlighted the important role of families in protecting children and teenagers from negative influences. The family, he said, is the first place where the character and behavior of the younger generation are shaped.He urged parents to maintain communication with their children and pay closer attention to their daily activities.
"The role of Gampong must also be very active. If teenagers gather until late at night, this must be monitored," he said.However, he stressed that the figure only represents cases that have been successfully uncovered. The actual number of drug users remains a serious challenge that requires comprehensive attention.
"These are only the figures for trafficking cases. How many users are there actually? Therefore, society must fight this problem together so that our younger generation can be protected," he said.Irwansyah once again called on all residents of Banda Aceh to jointly fight against drug trafficking. The eradication of drugs requires the attention and participation of all social groups so that the future of the younger generation is not further threatened.
