MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - The City Government of Medan carried out a large-scale collective cleanup campaign in commemoration of World Environment Day 2026, successfully collecting approximately 28 tons of waste from various locations across the city. The initiative, led by the Medan Environmental Agency, marked one of the largest environmental actions held at the municipal level this year.

The main event was centered at the urban forest park Taman Hutan Kota Beringin, drawing thousands of participants, including city officials, members of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), and residents who joined forces to support a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

Strong Message on Environmental Awareness and Climate Action

Before the cleanup activities began, Medan Deputy Mayor, Zakiyuddin Harahap, led a joint assembly with municipal authorities and military personnel, emphasizing the urgent need to strengthen public environmental awareness.

Carrying the global theme of World Environment Day 2026, "It's Time to Act for the Climate," he urged residents to move beyond awareness and take real, practical steps in protecting the environment.

He also recalled the severe flooding events that struck Medan in November 2024 and 2025, which both occurred on November 27, warning that similar disasters could recur without proper preventive action.

"We still clearly remember the major floods in November 2024 and 2025, both occurring on the same date, November 27. A similar incident could happen again in 2026 if we fail to act in time," Zakiyuddin Harahap said.

Government Push for Stronger Drainage Maintenance and Waste Control

Zakiyuddin further highlighted environmental degradation in upstream river areas, which contributes significantly to urban flooding. He also pointed out that improper waste disposal into drainage channels and rivers continues to worsen the situation.

He instructed district heads, village leaders, neighborhood units, and public infrastructure officers (P3SU) to intensify cleaning efforts in drainage systems and waterways, including the removal of hazardous tree branches that could obstruct water flow.

"Let us maintain our environment together, especially drainage channels. We never know when or where water will come, as many of our environmental problems are human-made," he emphasized.

He also stressed the importance of continuous public education to prevent illegal dumping practices, noting that violations still frequently occur, particularly at night.

"This message must be consistently delivered to the community. I still see people illegally dumping waste at night. Residents must be continuously reminded to keep their surroundings clean," he added.

19,000 Participants Join Citywide Cleanup, 28 Tons of Waste Collected

Head of the Medan Environmental Agency, Melvi Marlabayana, stated that World Environment Day 2026 activities began in early June with various environmental campaigns and public education programs on proper waste management.

The city also planted 1,383 trees across multiple areas before launching the coordinated large-scale cleanup, which later extended to several districts and the Babura River area.

In total, around 19,000 participants took part in the series of activities, resulting in the collection of 28 tons of waste across Medan.

"We involved 19,000 participants and successfully collected 28 tons of waste throughout the entire campaign," Melvi said.

Environmental Education and "Indonesia ASRI" National Movement

The Environmental Agency also strengthened its school-based environmental education programs through the Adiwiyata initiative, which encourages students to actively engage in environmental protection practices.

"This program encourages schools to actively contribute to environmental preservation," Melvi explained.

The celebration was further linked to the nationwide launch of the "Indonesia ASRI" movement, inaugurated via video conference by Indonesian Minister of Environment Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat. The initiative aims to strengthen national commitment toward a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment. (IDNC)
