MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - Pegadaian continues to expand its business operations while broadening its financial services in Aceh and North Sumatra. The strengthening of its business is reflected in the growing number of active customers, increased adoption of gold-based products, and the continued development of digital services that are increasingly tailored to the needs of the public.

Pegadaian presented its business development during a media gathering with chief editors and journalists at Hotel Karibia Medan on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. The event was attended by Yohanis Wulang, Head of Pegadaian Regional Directorate I Medan, which oversees North Sumatra and Aceh. He was accompanied by Wawan Triadi, Deputy for Operations at Regional Directorate I Medan; Faozan Wahyu Praptono, Deputy for Business at Medan Area 1; Heri Susianto, Deputy for Business at Medan Area 2; and other company executives.

According to Pegadaian, the number of active customers has now reached approximately 1.79 million. This represents a 36.3 percent year-on-year increase. The growth indicates that more people are using Pegadaian's services, both to meet their financing needs and to build wealth through investment products.

Active Customer Base Continues to Grow

The increase in the customer base is one of the key indicators of Pegadaian's business development in Aceh and North Sumatra. The figure of 1.79 million active customers demonstrates that there remains substantial demand for accessible financial services.

Pegadaian is not relying solely on pawn-based lending. The company continues to develop a range of products that give the public greater flexibility in managing their financial needs. The strategy is also helping reshape Pegadaian's traditional image, which has long been associated primarily with obtaining funds by pledging valuable assets.

Yohanis Wulang, who previously served as Deputy for Business at the Semarang Area, said Pegadaian continues to develop various business segments. These include pawn financing, share-backed loans, gold installment plans, gold-based credit services, Hajj and Umrah financing, microfinance, vehicle financing, digital lending, as well as other investment and financing services.

The diversity of these products reflects Pegadaian's changing position within the financial services industry. The company is no longer focused exclusively on pawn transactions but is seeking to become a financial institution that provides various options to help people meet their financial needs and build wealth.

This development is particularly relevant to Aceh and North Sumatra, both of which have diverse population structures and varying economic potential. Pegadaian is therefore seeking to expand the reach of its services so that financing and investment products can be accessed by an increasingly broad segment of the population.

Gold Savings Becomes a Key Business Pillar

Alongside customer growth, Pegadaian is placing particular emphasis on the development of its gold savings product, Tabungan Emas. The product is an important part of the company's strategy to promote gold more widely as a means of preserving wealth and building long-term value.

Changing consumer behavior is also contributing to the growth of gold-based products. While gold was once viewed primarily as jewelry by many people, an increasing number of consumers now regard it as part of their financial planning.

As a result, consumers no longer need to own a bracelet, necklace, or other jewelry before they can begin accumulating gold. Through Tabungan Emas, they can purchase gold gradually and build their holdings according to their individual financial capacity.

The trend also indicates that people are increasingly turning to different methods of building assets for future needs. Gold has particular appeal because it is widely recognized as an asset that can be held over the long term.

Pegadaian is combining the development of its gold products with the use of digital technology. The company offers the Tring application, which supports various services and transactions digitally.

Digitalization is one of Pegadaian's strategies for bringing its services closer to the public. Through the application, transactions can be carried out more conveniently and quickly, while also being easier to monitor. The move also reflects changing social habits, as people increasingly rely on digital devices to access financial services.

Digitalization Must Go Hand in Hand with Service Quality

The expansion of digital services gives Pegadaian an opportunity to broaden access to its offerings to an even larger segment of the population. Business growth, however, cannot be sustained solely through an increasing number of customers or transactions.

Pegadaian must also ensure service quality, transaction security, and public trust. As the number of users continues to rise, the company faces the challenge of ensuring that every customer receives a positive service experience, both at its branches and through digital channels.

Strong business growth must ultimately deliver tangible benefits to the public. Digitalization should not merely mean transferring conventional services to an application. Instead, it should make it easier for people to understand the products, costs, benefits, and risks associated with the services they use.

Against this backdrop, Pegadaian's transformation in Aceh and North Sumatra extends beyond business performance. The company also aims to expand financial inclusion, improve public knowledge about investment, and provide people with more options for managing their assets.

The presentation at the media gathering further highlighted Pegadaian's direction of development. Gold and digitalization represent two important pillars of the company's business strategy. Gold serves as one of the key assets offered to the public, while technology functions as a tool to make access to these products and services easier.

With the continued growth in active customers and an increasingly diverse service portfolio, Pegadaian has significant opportunities to strengthen its role in Aceh and North Sumatra. However, these opportunities must be matched by the company's ability to consistently maintain service quality, transaction security, and customer trust.

Ultimately, the success of an investment cannot be measured solely by the amount of gold accumulated or the volume of registered transactions. Equally important is the extent to which people gain a better understanding of how to manage their finances, build assets, and plan more carefully for the future.

With this approach, Pegadaian's growth does not end with rising business figures. Instead, it can become part of a broader effort to provide the public with access to financial services, familiarize them with investment instruments, and help them make more informed financial decisions. (IDNC)
