MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - The morning atmosphere on Sunday (June 21, 2026) at Lapangan Merdeka Medan was filled with energy and joy. Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas spent his weekend among residents, actively participating in the regular Car-Free Day (CFD) event in the city center.

From the early hours, the city was already lively. The fresh air of Medan accompanied the start of the mayor's physical activity, as he began his routine with a morning jog. He was joined by Assistant for Government and Social Affairs M. Sofya, as well as several sub-district heads from across Medan who also took part in the activity.

Morning Run as a Symbol of Closeness

The starting point of the activity was the official residence of the Mayor of Medan. From there, the group moved through several city streets toward Lapangan Merdeka. The morning jog was not merely a form of physical exercise, but also a symbolic expression of closeness between the city leadership and district-level administrative structures.

Along the route, numerous residents warmly greeted the passing group with enthusiasm. The presence of the city leader engaging in public sport activities drew attention and was widely regarded as a rare yet positive sight in the public space.

Enthusiastic Reception at Car-Free Day

At Lapangan Merdeka, the central location of the CFD event, a lively atmosphere had already taken shape. Thousands of residents utilized the car-free morning for sports, recreation, or simply enjoying the fresh air in the city center.

Without delay, Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas joined a mass group exercise session. Rhythmic music and synchronized movements of participants created an energetic and vibrant atmosphere in the heart of Medan.

His presence quickly attracted public attention. Many attendees recorded the moment on their mobile phones, while others enthusiastically followed the guided aerobics movements. The interaction between government officials and citizens unfolded in a relaxed and approachable manner.

Call for a Healthy Lifestyle

In this context, the mayor emphasized the importance of regular physical activity in everyday urban life. He noted that health is a fundamental foundation for building a productive and successful city.

"Health is our capital to build this city. Through today's jogging and group exercise, I invite all Medan residents to make sports an integral part of their lives. When citizens are healthy, the city will naturally become more productive and happier," said Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas.

The Medan municipal government continues to promote various programs supporting a healthy lifestyle, particularly through public spaces such as Lapangan Merdeka, which is regularly used as a center for community sports activities.

Car-Free Day in Medan is increasingly developing not only as a sports event but also as a social space connecting government and the public. Direct participation by city officials strengthens emotional ties and encourages broader community engagement in health-oriented activities.

Lapangan Merdeka once again demonstrates its role as an inclusive public space where citizens of all ages enjoy a car-free morning, engage in sports, and build social connections in a more environmentally friendly urban atmosphere.

The mayor's participation is seen as a positive example to motivate citizens toward an active and healthy lifestyle, while also strengthening the relationship between the government and the people. (IDNC)
