DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM - The long wait for residents of Dusun Rejo and Dusun Abadi in Tandem Hilir II Village, Hamparan Perak District, Deli Serdang Regency, for asphalt roads has finally come to an end. After 81 years, the two road sections that had previously been difficult for residents to access are now considerably more comfortable to travel on. Farmers, in particular, are benefiting from the improvement as they use the roads daily to reach their rice fields.
Deli Serdang Regent Asri Ludin Tambunan officially inaugurated the two road sections on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The inauguration also marked the completion of infrastructure that residents in the area had been waiting for for decades.For the community, the road paving represents far more than a construction project. The roads serve as important access routes for daily activities, including children's journeys to school, residents' mobility, and farmers' activities in transporting and managing their agricultural produce.
Siti, one of the residents, expressed her gratitude after seeing the road in her neighborhood finally receive the government's attention."I have lived here since I was a little child, and now I have children of my own. The road has only just been paved. The children's journey to school is also much more comfortable now," Siti said when Deli Serdang Regent Dr. H. Asri Ludin Tambunan officially inaugurated the two road sections on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
The road construction is a new experience for residents who had previously been accustomed to poor road conditions that caused significant difficulties, particularly during the rainy season. Improved road access has also given the community hope for smoother economic and social activities in the area.Ari Junaidi, one of the residents, expressed his appreciation to the government for constructing the road. In his view, the improved road conditions have made farmers' daily journeys to their fields much easier.
"Thank you very much for paving the roads in Dusun Abadi and Benteng. These roads were difficult to pass, especially for farmers traveling to their fields. Now we can experience how much more comfortable it is to travel to the rice fields and work there," said Ari Junaidi, a resident.In addition to making things easier for farmers, the new road has improved overall mobility for the community. Schoolchildren now have better access to their schools, while residents can carry out their daily activities without having to worry as much about poor road conditions.
The infrastructure improvements are also expected to have a positive impact on the community's economic activities. Better roads make it easier for residents to transport agricultural produce while strengthening connections between residential areas and local activity centers.
In addition to paving the roads, the Deli Serdang Regency Government has also carried out river regulation in a residential area. The measure has benefited residents by improving the flow and drainage of water.
Sahnan, a resident of the area, welcomed the government's river regulation work. According to him, approximately 600 meters of the river was dredged, allowing water in front of residents' homes to flow more effectively."Thank you for the support with the river regulation. The river in front of the residents' homes was dredged along a stretch of about 600 meters, and the water now flows better. In the future, we, the residents of Block 1, also hope that a drainage system can be built," he said.
The request for a drainage system immediately drew the attention of Deli Serdang Regent Asri Ludin. He said the regency government was prepared to support the construction of roads and drainage facilities. However, he stressed that the village administration and residents must also take part in maintaining the infrastructure that has already been built."I will contribute to the construction of the drainage system and roads. But I want to reach an agreement with the village. If I build the drainage system, there should at least be regular community work to keep it clean," he emphasized.
According to the regent, it is not enough for infrastructure to be funded solely through government budgets. Sustainable maintenance requires the involvement of the village administration and the community so that the benefits of the development can be preserved over the long term.
Asri Ludin urged the village administration and residents to work together to keep roads and drainage channels clean. He reminded residents to remove vegetation growing onto the roadway as well as waste that could clog water channels.
In his assessment, infrastructure can quickly deteriorate if the community does not participate in its care and maintenance."No matter how extensive a construction project is, if it is not protected and maintained, it will not last long. This is not only my responsibility; it is our shared responsibility," he said.
On the occasion, Asri Ludin also praised the community's initiative in installing barriers at several road sections. The barriers are intended to prevent vehicles carrying excessively heavy loads from using the roads and increasing the risk of damage.However, the regent reminded residents that the placement of such barriers must take the community's interests into account, particularly vehicles transporting agricultural produce. Access restrictions must be implemented reasonably so that efforts to protect the roads do not simultaneously hinder residents' economic activities.
Asri Ludin emphasized that infrastructure projects must provide long-term benefits for the community. The roads built by the government, he said, should support farmers' mobility, make children's journeys to school easier, and strengthen residents' economic activities."Residents said earlier that this hamlet had never known asphalt since Indonesia's independence, and even before independence. Therefore, this road should be maintained for as long as possible. If the roads that have already been built last for a long time, other areas can also benefit from future development. Construction should not always be concentrated in the same places," he said.
The Deli Serdang Regency Government hopes the road construction will become part of efforts to ensure a more equitable distribution of infrastructure across rural areas. Joint maintenance by the government and the community will be a crucial factor in ensuring that the newly constructed roads remain in good condition and continue to benefit residents over the long term.The working visit by the Deli Serdang regent to Tandem Hilir II Village was not focused solely on infrastructure. On the occasion, Asri Ludin also distributed assistance from Baznas as well as wheelchairs to residents in need.
The entire event reflected the government's attention to the community's basic needs, both through infrastructure development and social assistance. With improved roads and support for residents' needs, Tandem Hilir II now has better conditions for daily activities after its residents waited decades for the infrastructure.
