IPSM MEDAN LEADERSHIP RECEIVES MAYOR RICO WAAS: Medan Mayor Rico Waas receives the IPSM Medan leadership during an audience meeting and urges the organization to strengthen its identity and social role so that its work can provide tangible benefits for the community.

MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - Medan Mayor, Rico Waas, has called on the Medan Community Social Workers Association (Ikatan Pekerja Sosial Masyarakat/IPSM) to strengthen its character, identity, and social role so that its presence can provide tangible benefits for the community.

Rico Waas made the statement during a meeting with the IPSM Medan leadership at the official residence of the Medan mayor on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The meeting was held to strengthen cooperation, exchange ideas, and deliver an invitation for the mayor to attend the IPSM Medan Regional Conference (Musyawarah Daerah/Musda), which will take place in early August 2026.

During the meeting, Rico Waas emphasized that IPSM Medan must not merely exist as a social organization, but must develop a clear direction and concrete contributions that can be directly felt by the community.

Rico Waas Urges IPSM to Build a Clear Identity

Rico Waas explained that the large number of social organizations operating in the community presents a challenge for IPSM to establish its own characteristics and independent role. According to him, IPSM needs to have a strong concept so that its duties do not overlap with those of other social organizations.

"With the many organizations in the social sector, IPSM must build a strong identity so there is no overlap with other organizations," said Rico Waas, accompanied by Head of the Medan Social Service Khoiruddin Rangkuti, Head of the Women's, Children's and Population Protection Office Edliaty, and Head of the Government Affairs Division Rudi Asriandy.

Rico Waas stated that a social organization must have a mature concept, clear objectives, and the ability to explain its unique position and role compared with other organizations.

"There must be a strengthening of the way of thinking. There should be no overlapping roles with other organizations. What distinguishes IPSM from others must become a special statement and be clearly communicated," he said.

He explained that every organization has its respective functions and responsibilities. Therefore, IPSM must establish clear boundaries regarding its duties to create harmonious cooperation with other social organizations.

Through proper division of responsibilities, Rico Waas hopes IPSM can build synergy in providing social services to the community without creating misunderstandings in carrying out its duties in the field.

Improving the Quality of Social Workers

In addition to strengthening organizational identity, Rico Waas also highlighted the importance of improving the quality of human resources among social workers. He said IPSM members need to receive appropriate training to develop the skills and professionalism required to carry out social responsibilities.

According to Rico Waas, training programs for community social workers should provide materials that meet field requirements and equip members with practical abilities. In this way, IPSM can produce competent social workers capable of addressing various social challenges.

The Medan City Government, he added, is ready to support the development of IPSM so that the organization can expand and operate actively down to the neighborhood level.

"I hope the Musda will become a new starting point for IPSM Medan and produce a more innovative leadership. An organization must not work in an ordinary way, but must develop more revolutionary communication with the community so that its presence truly provides benefits," said Rico Waas.

Rico Waas hopes the IPSM Medan Musda will become a momentum for organizational renewal and produce new leaders capable of creating positive changes.

IPSM Medan Musda Scheduled for August 8, 2026

Meanwhile, Chairman of the IPSM Medan Mandate Board, Riswan, stated that his organization will hold the Musda on Saturday, August 8, 2026. The meeting is a step toward revitalizing the organization, which has so far not fully optimized its role.

Riswan explained that before holding the Musda, IPSM Medan will also conduct Basic Training (Latihan Dasar/Latsar) as part of preparations to improve members' competencies.

Through these activities, IPSM hopes to rebuild the organization's spirit and prepare members to carry out their social duties with better understanding and greater competence within the community.

"We hope Mr. Mayor can attend and deliver a speech at the event later," said Riswan.

The IPSM Medan Musda is expected to become an important moment in forming new leadership that can make the organization more active, professional, and capable of providing a stronger contribution to supporting social services in Medan City. (IDNC)
