PREPARATIONS FOR TRAIL OF THE KINGS: The North Sumatra Provincial Government and Samosir Regency Government are intensifying preparations for the international trail running event Trail of The Kings by UTMB 2026 at Lake Toba, scheduled for June 12–14, 2026.

MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM The international trail running event Trail of The Kings by UTMB 2026 is set to take place from June 12 to 14, 2026, in the Lake Toba region of Samosir Regency, North Sumatra. The prestigious sports tourism event is expected to attract runners from 33 countries.

The announcement was made during a coordination meeting for the preparation of Trail of The Kings by UTMB 2026, held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Raja Inal Siregar Hall on Jalan Pangeran Diponegoro No. 30, Medan. Representatives from regional government agencies of North Sumatra Province and Samosir Regency attended the meeting.

Lake Toba Positioned as a Global Sports Tourism Destination

North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution, represented by Assistant for General Administration of the North Sumatra Provincial Government Muhammad Suib, emphasized that the international event would serve as a major opportunity to showcase Lake Toba's readiness as a world-class tourism destination.

"We must demonstrate that Lake Toba is not only blessed with extraordinary natural beauty, but is also capable of hosting professional and world-class international events. This event should become a source of pride for the people of North Sumatra and a driver of regional economic growth," Suib said.

He called on all government institutions and stakeholders to maximize preparations for the event, stressing that the success of the international competition is a shared responsibility.

Meanwhile, Head of the North Sumatra Office of Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy Yuda Pratiwi Setiawan stated that the return of Trail of The Kings by UTMB would further strengthen North Sumatra's position as one of Indonesia's leading sports tourism destinations.

Hundreds of International Runners Have Registered

Yuda revealed that 752 runners from 33 countries have registered for the event so far. Participants are expected to come from Malaysia, Singapore, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Australia, Hong Kong, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, Oman, Ireland, Indonesia, and several other countries.

The organizers are preparing several race categories, including 100K, 60K, 28K, 10K, 5K, as well as a special category for children.

According to Yuda, the growing number of international participants reflects Lake Toba's rising reputation as a global sports tourism destination.

Yuda added that the 2025 edition of Trail of The Kings by UTMB had already delivered significant economic and tourism benefits to North Sumatra.

The previous event attracted 1,081 runners from 26 countries and 21 provinces across Indonesia. The competition generated positive impacts across multiple sectors, including small and medium enterprises, hospitality, transportation services, culinary businesses, and local handicrafts. The total economic value generated reached approximately Rp101.96 billion.

"This event is a golden opportunity to promote the natural beauty, traditions, and culture of North Sumatra to the international community while strengthening Lake Toba's position as a world-class sports tourism destination," Yuda said.

The coordination meeting was also attended by representatives of the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum, Samosir Regional Secretary Marudut Tua Sitinjak, Event Organizer Creation Head Andre Ginting, as well as officials from the North Sumatra Provincial Government, Samosir Regency Government, and other related institutions.
