MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - Medan Mayor Rico Waas has called on all residents to embrace the spirit of sports as a new driving force to accelerate the city's development. He said sports not only improve public health but also strengthen social cohesion, boost productivity, and support the realization of an inclusive, progressive, prosperous, and sustainable Medan.

The mayor made the remarks during the closing ceremony of the "Padel for All" tournament at 59 Padel Hub on Jalan Mangonsidi, Medan, on Sunday evening, July 12, 2026. On the occasion, Rico Waas also presented awards to the tournament champions.

The three-day competition, held from July 10 to July 12, 2026, was one of the events commemorating the 436th Anniversary of Medan City. The tournament received an enthusiastic response from the public and became a gathering point for padel enthusiasts from various age groups and social backgrounds.

According to Rico Waas, the tournament's success demonstrated that sports have the power to unite people regardless of their age, profession, or social status.

He also expressed his appreciation to Beyond Sport Profesional 061 for successfully organizing the sporting event, which attracted strong public interest and a high level of participation.

Sports Unite Communities Across All Walks of Life

In his remarks, Rico Waas emphasized the important role of sports in shaping character and strengthening social solidarity. Through sporting activities, people learn to uphold the values of fair play, discipline, teamwork, and mutual respect.

"On the court, there are no differences in age, profession, or social status. What truly matters is the spirit of fair competition, sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, and mutual respect," Rico Waas said.

He noted that such values provide a strong foundation for building harmony within a diverse society. For that reason, the Medan City Government continues to support a wide range of sporting events, allowing more residents to participate and experience their positive impact.

Public Health as a Foundation for Sustainable Development

Beyond fostering unity, the mayor stressed that sports play a significant role in improving public health. People who exercise regularly, he said, enjoy better physical fitness and are able to carry out their daily activities more productively.

He further explained that public health is one of the most important pillars of regional development. The healthier the population, the greater the opportunity to improve the quality of human resources, which in turn serves as a key driver of Medan's long-term development.

"This positive energy will propel Medan toward becoming a more inclusive, progressive, prosperous, and sustainable city," Rico Waas concluded.

Chairman of Beyond Sport Profesional 061, Saif Adli Heer, expressed his appreciation for the overwhelming public response to the "Padel for All" tournament. He said the strong level of participation reflects the rapid growth of padel as an emerging sport in Medan, attracting an increasing number of enthusiasts.

Saif revealed that the tournament featured 135 teams, or approximately 270 athletes, competing for championship titles. The figure illustrates the growing interest among the public in a sport that continues to expand across many regions of Indonesia.

According to him, the tournament was not merely about determining champions, but also served as an opportunity to strengthen relationships among participants while encouraging a healthier lifestyle within the community.

Sporting events such as this, he added, can become a platform for collaboration between sports communities, young people, and the Medan City Government in contributing to the city's development through positive activities.

"Through positive and healthy activities like this, we hope to build strong synergy between the younger generation and the Medan City Government so that we can continue developing Medan together. At the same time, this tournament provides an excellent opportunity to strengthen friendship, solidarity, and the spirit of togetherness among our residents," Saif said.
