MTQ PREPARATION IN NORTH SUMATRA: Coordination meeting for the 40th Provincial MTQ 2026 chaired by Sulaiman Harahap at the Governor’s Office in Medan, discussing technical preparations and cross-sector collaboration.

MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM At least 1,092 participants have officially registered for the 40th Provincial-level Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran (MTQ) in North Sumatra, scheduled for 2026 M/1447 H. The region's largest Islamic competition serves not only as a Qur'an recitation contest but also as a platform for character building and strengthening Islamic values within society.

The North Sumatra Provincial Government emphasized that this year's MTQ carries strong expectations of nurturing a Qur'an-oriented generation of youth with excellent skills, strong moral integrity, and solid social character. The event is also expected to reinforce collaboration between government institutions, educational bodies, and the wider community.

The opening and coordination meeting for the 40th MTQ was held at Meeting Room I of the North Sumatra Governor's Office on Jalan Pangeran Diponegoro No. 30, Medan. The meeting, held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, was chaired by Acting Provincial Secretary Sulaiman Harahap.

Government Strengthens Preparations Ahead of MTQ 2026

Sulaiman Harahap stated that the provincial government is committed to ensuring all preparations for MTQ 2026 are carried out thoroughly and in detail. He instructed all Regional Apparatus Organizations (OPD) to work in close coordination to ensure the smooth running of the event, which will take place from June 15 to 24, 2026, at the Astaka Building on Jalan Willem Iskandar, Medan.

Several agencies, including the Transportation Office, Public Works and Infrastructure Office, Health Office, as well as district and city administrations across North Sumatra, are involved in ensuring transportation, infrastructure readiness, healthcare services, and technical support throughout the event.

Sulaiman also underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration to ensure that MTQ delivers not only organizational success but also meaningful social and spiritual impact.

"This MTQ is expected to strengthen cooperation between local governments, educational institutions, religious organizations, and society at large, while producing a strong Qur'an-based generation with solid character," he said.

1,092 Participants from 20 Regions Confirm Participation

Chairman of the North Sumatra LPTQ, Muhammad Yasir Tanjung, reported that 1,092 participants from 20 cities and regencies have registered to compete in various categories.

Regions with the highest participation include Deli Serdang, Serdang Bedagai, Padang Lawas, South Labuhanbatu, and Langkat. The high turnout reflects strong enthusiasm across regions in developing young Qur'an reciters.

Yasir noted that MTQ is not merely a competition but also an important tool for strengthening Islamic education at the village level. He highlighted the governor's vision of providing at least one Qur'an teacher in every village.

"Out of 6,113 villages, the governor's target is clear: one Qur'an teacher per village. This is a major strength and is entirely achievable. With strong cooperation, we can bring society in North Sumatra closer to the Qur'an," he said.

Astaka to Host Grand Opening Ceremony

The 40th MTQ will be held at the Astaka Building on Jalan Willem Iskandar, Medan, chosen for its capacity to accommodate thousands of participants, officials, and visitors.

The opening ceremony is planned to feature Islamic cultural performances, a choir from MAN 1 Medan, and a marching band to enhance the festive atmosphere.

A symbolic bedug drumming will mark the official opening of the event. International Qari Muhammad Zian Fahrezi from West Nusa Tenggara is also scheduled to perform Qur'anic recitation as a special highlight of the ceremony.

His presence is expected to elevate the spiritual atmosphere and inspire participants throughout the competition.

Building a Qur'an-Oriented Future Generation

MTQ 2026 is seen not only as a religious competition but also as part of a long-term strategy to develop human resources based on Islamic values. The government hopes to cultivate a generation that excels in Qur'an recitation while maintaining strong moral integrity.

Strong collaboration between government bodies, educational institutions, religious organizations, and the public is considered key to the success of the event. The MTQ is also expected to strengthen religious identity and foster social cohesion across North Sumatra.

This shared vision aims to build a religious, harmonious, and competitive society in the province. (IDNC)
