MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM – Medan Mayor, Rico Waas, attended the 2026 Buddhist Art and Culture Festival held in conjunction with the Vesak (Tri-Suci Waisak) celebration, organized by Buddhist youth at Center Point Mall on Sunday, May 31, 2026.
The event served not only as a celebration but also as a moment of reflection on moral values aimed at strengthening harmony within Medan's diverse society.A Message of Light and Moral Awareness
In his remarks, Rico Waas emphasized the importance of maintaining conscious thoughts and attitudes in an increasingly complex social environment. He cautioned against jealousy and prejudice, which often arise without a proper understanding of real circumstances.Under the theme "The Birth of Buddha, the Light of Virtue for the World," he encouraged the Buddhist community to continue spreading kindness in everyday life.
"On this Vesak Day, we once again share the light of goodness in our lives. We should approach others with goodwill rather than suspicion," Rico Waas said.He also praised the commitment of Buddhist youth who continue to develop spiritually and strengthen their moral foundation. According to him, spiritual closeness serves as an essential source of ethical strength.
"When we are close to God, I believe there is still light within our hearts," he added.Inclusive Medan and Equal Public Service
The mayor reaffirmed the city government's commitment to building an inclusive Medan free from discrimination, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or social background. He stressed that no resident should feel disadvantaged in public life or government services.He also instructed all levels of local administration—from neighborhood units and village heads to district officials—to ensure fair and equal service delivery without favoritism.

Rico further encouraged residents to directly communicate their concerns to the city administration, ranging from infrastructure issues and drainage problems to bureaucratic services."On behalf of the City of Medan, I wish everyone a blessed Vesak 2026.
