DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM- The Deli Serdang Regency Government has begun testing the potential of shallot cultivation as an agricultural commodity that could help improve farmers' welfare while meeting the community's food needs. The trial is being carried out in Dalu X-B Village, Tanjung Morawa District. On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the first planting was conducted there together with the Sri Lestari Farmers' Group.
Deli Serdang Regent dr. H. Asri Ludin Tambunan, accompanied by Deli Serdang Deputy Regent Lom Lom Suwondo, SS, took part in the initial planting on a 2.5 Rantai demonstration plot. The Deli Serdang Regency Government prepared the demonstration plot as an initial step to observe the results of shallot cultivation while assessing the possibility of expanding the crop to larger agricultural areas.The Deli Serdang Government hopes that expanding shallot cultivation will not only provide farmers with an alternative crop but also contribute to securing the region's food supply. Local shallot production is expected to help stabilize supplies and better meet the community's needs.
Deli Serdang Regent dr. H. Asri Ludin Tambunan said the regional government wanted to directly assess the potential of shallot cultivation first before pursuing broader development of the crop. He said the results from the demonstration plot would serve as one of the bases for evaluating the program and determining subsequent steps.
"Hopefully, the results can improve farmers' welfare while also helping reduce inflationary pressure related to shallot supplies in Deli Serdang. Ultimately, we want this region to be able to meet its daily food needs independently," he said.For the first cultivation phase, the government provided 100 kilograms of Brebes shallot seeds. In addition to the seeds, farmers received support in the form of fertilizer, mulch and pesticides to assist cultivation through to harvest.
The 2.5-Rantai demonstration plot is expected to produce around one ton of shallots. The regional government will use crop productivity, field conditions and harvest yields as indicators to assess the suitability of expanding shallot cultivation.The Deli Serdang Agriculture Office will accompany farmers throughout the cultivation process. The assistance is intended to ensure that farmers receive technical guidance from planting and crop maintenance through to harvesting.
The Regent emphasized that the regional government would not limit its support to the initial stage but would continue monitoring the development of cultivation in the field."We support our farmers from the beginning. First, we are testing this two-and-a-half-Rantai plot. Hopefully, the results will be good so that the plot can serve as an example for other farmers," he said.
According to Yuliadi, a successful first cultivation could open opportunities for the sustainable development of shallot farming. He also hopes that future harvests will benefit farmers and contribute to more productive use of agricultural land.
"Thank you for responding to our request to cultivate shallots on this land. Hopefully, the harvest will be successful and the cultivation can be further developed," he said.In addition to the shallot planting, the event also served to strengthen support for agricultural equipment and infrastructure for farmers' groups. The government handed over agricultural machinery and equipment (Alsintan), including a four-wheel tractor and a water pump, to the Brigade Pangan Bersinar.
The government also handed over another four-wheel tractor to the Lestari Association of Farmers' Groups (Gapoktan). The assistance is expected to facilitate land preparation and improve the efficiency of the group's agricultural activities.
The Deli Serdang Regency Government plans to continue cooperation with the central government to meet the need for agricultural machinery and equipment at the farmers' group level. The equipment is planned to be utilized through Technical Implementation Units (UPT) under the Agriculture Office so that it can provide optimal support for agricultural activities.
The provision of agricultural equipment is an important component in efforts to increase farmers' productivity. The availability of tractors, water pumps, cultivators and other supporting equipment can assist farmers in land preparation and help address various technical challenges in the field.On the occasion, farmers also submitted several requests to the regional government. These included additional cultivators to support land preparation, the normalization of river channels to improve irrigation systems, as well as the construction or provision of the water gates required by farmers.
The Deli Serdang Regency Government will review the requests submitted by farmers by taking into account local conditions and actual needs in the field. The regional government also stated that the requests would be followed up according to their priorities and technical requirements.The development of shallot cultivation in Dalu X-B Village is part of the regional government's efforts to diversify agricultural commodities. The results of the demonstration plot will serve as a basis for assessing the potential for broader development while also demonstrating which cultivation methods are suitable for local soil conditions and farmers' capabilities.
If the first planting achieves the targeted results, the demonstration plot could serve as a reference for other farmers interested in cultivating shallots. The regional government can also use the evaluation results to determine further forms of agricultural extension, support for production inputs and the infrastructure required by farmers.The initiative also underscores the Deli Serdang Regency Government's efforts to strengthen the agricultural sector through cooperation between the government and farmers' groups. Through technical assistance, production input support and the provision of necessary infrastructure, shallot cultivation is expected to develop gradually and generate economic benefits for the community.
