UNITED ACTION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION: Deli Serdang Deputy Regent Lom Lom Suwondo joins representatives of the North Sumatra Regional Police and Deli Serdang Police in the Jumat Asri initiative, integrated with the Green Policing programme, in Pagar Jati Village, Lubuk Pakam District.

DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM - The Deli Serdang Regency Government, together with the North Sumatra Regional Police and Deli Serdang Police, has strengthened its collaboration to protect the environment through tree-planting and community-led clean-up initiatives. The partnership was carried out through the Jumat Asri (Safe, Healthy, Clean and Beautiful Friday) initiative, which was integrated with the Green Policing programme. The event took place in Lubuk Pakam District.

Held under the theme 'Working Together for a Safe, Healthy, Clean and Beautiful Lubuk Pakam', the initiative took place on Friday, 6 November 2026, along Jalan Gereja, at the Simpang Gang Sepur junction, Dusun VI, Pagar Jati Village, Lubuk Pakam District.

Through this initiative, the local government and police encouraged residents to take greater responsibility for environmental protection through practical, community-based action.

The programme featured several activities, including the distribution of mango and guava saplings to village officials and local residents, the provision of cleaning equipment, and tree-planting activities in the surrounding area.

Deli Serdang Deputy Regent Lom Lom Suwondo praised the North Sumatra Regional Police and Deli Serdang Police for initiating the programme and working together to deliver the environmental initiative. He said that protecting the environment and improving ecological conditions required the commitment and active participation of all sections of society.

Closer Cooperation Between Local Government and Police

Lom Lom explained that the regency government could not tackle environmental challenges on its own. Support from the police, district and village administrations, as well as the wider community, was essential to creating a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

He expressed hope that the Jumat Asri initiative and Green Policing programme would not remain merely symbolic events or short-term activities. Instead, they should develop into continuous and practical efforts that encourage residents to take an active role in protecting and maintaining their local surroundings.

'On behalf of the Deli Serdang Regency Government, we would like to express our gratitude and our full support for this initiative. Environmental protection and improving ecological conditions are important responsibilities that must concern us all,' he said.

Lom Lom also reaffirmed the regency government's readiness to expand its cooperation with the police. He believed that positive joint activities involving the community could deliver immediate benefits while encouraging residents to make cleanliness and environmental protection an integral part of their everyday lives.

He urged residents not simply to accept the donated saplings and cleaning equipment, but also to look after them properly and make long-term use of the resources provided. In this way, the tree-planting initiative could deliver lasting improvements to environmental quality.

Green Policing Puts Environmental Protection at Its Heart

Meanwhile, the Head of the Personnel Bureau of the North Sumatra Regional Police, Senior Police Commissioner Yusup Rahmanto, explained that Green Policing was a policing concept centred on environmental protection, conservation and the enforcement of environmental law.

He emphasised that the concept went beyond keeping public spaces clean and carrying out tree-planting activities. Green Policing was also intended to influence public attitudes and behaviour by strengthening awareness of the importance of protecting nature and preventing environmental damage.

According to Yusup, prevention should be the top priority in environmental protection. Criminal prosecution and the enforcement of environmental regulations should be considered a last resort when violations occur. The police therefore needed to build a shared sense of responsibility through public education, leading by example and encouraging community participation in environmental activities.

He also explained that a healthy environment offered significant benefits to people's lives. Protecting nature could help reduce the risk of floods and landslides, safeguard water resources, maintain air quality and improve public health.

These benefits demonstrated that environmental protection went far beyond aesthetic considerations or maintaining the appearance of clean and attractive neighbourhoods. It was directly connected to the safety, health and livelihoods of the community.

'If we protect nature, nature will protect us in return. That is why we must continue strengthening our commitment to the environment and pass this responsibility on to future generations,' he urged.

Environmental Initiatives Must Be Sustained for the Long Term

The Jumat Asri initiative, combined with Green Policing, provides an example of a collaborative approach to strengthening environmental awareness. The local government and police are not merely encouraging residents to keep their surroundings clean, but are also promoting their active involvement in looking after shared public spaces.

The distribution of mango and guava saplings forms part of efforts to expand green spaces in residential areas. Meanwhile, the cleaning equipment provided is intended to support community clean-up activities and the regular maintenance of public areas.

The involvement of village administrations and local residents is also essential to ensuring the programme continues in the long term. Residents can help ensure that newly planted trees grow properly, that the cleaning equipment is used effectively, and that environmental protection becomes an established part of everyday household life.

The event was also attended by the Chief of Deli Serdang Police, Senior Police Commissioner Muhammad, other police officers, district heads accompanied by representatives of the District Leadership Coordination Forum, village administration representatives and members of the local community.

Through this collaboration, the Deli Serdang Regency Government hopes that Jumat Asri and Green Policing will develop into a shared culture within society. Cross-sector cooperation and active public participation are expected to help create a cleaner, greener, healthier and safer environment for present and future generations. (IDNC)
