MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - North Sumatra Governor Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution is preparing two forms of support for Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU). The support includes assistance for the construction of UMSU's Integrated Campus IV and the allocation of a special scholarship quota for UMSU students. The measures are expected to strengthen the development of higher education while expanding access to university education for students across North Sumatra.
Bobby Nasution announced the support before thousands of new UMSU students, Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, several deputy ministers, members of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), the North Sumatra Police Chief, several regional heads, members of the UMSU academic community, and other invited guests. The announcement was made during the Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (PKKMB) at UMSU on Jalan Kapten Muchtar Basri in Medan on Monday, September 28, 2026.On the occasion, Bobby emphasized that the North Sumatra Provincial Government offers several scholarship programs that students can access. The provincial government will also establish a special quota for UMSU students.
"North Sumatra has numerous scholarship programs. We will also provide scholarships for UMSU students. With 6,027 new students, we are confident that we can provide scholarships to many of them through to graduation," Bobby said.According to Bobby, the new model is intended to provide scholarship recipients with greater certainty regarding financial support throughout their studies. He also announced a special quota for UMSU students as an expression of the regional government's support for the university.
"Mr. Deputy Minister, afterward, what the rector has just mentioned will be completed. Mr. Rector will receive an additional gift on top of what must be completed by 2027. We will provide a special quota for UMSU students," he said.In addition to announcing scholarship support, Bobby urged new UMSU students to make productive use of technological developments. He referred to this year's PKKMB theme, "One Click, One Million Impacts," and its connection with digital development and artificial intelligence (AI).
According to Bobby, students must be able to use technology as a tool to develop their own work and ideas. He expressed hope that students would not remain merely technology users but would instead develop their own ideas and create innovations."This is the right campus for you. Therefore, study well and properly. And most importantly, continue to be grateful to and remain connected with your parents," he urged.
This year, UMSU admitted 6,027 new students, bringing the university's total student population to 29,617.
"This year, the number of newly admitted students increased by 1,000. Among the new students are 194 non-Muslims, bringing the total number of non-Muslim students to 1,031. This demonstrates that our campus is open and inclusive and provides everyone with the opportunity to study at UMSU," he said.Akrim explained that the diversity of UMSU's student body reflects the university's openness in providing opportunities for higher education. In addition to students from various regions across Indonesia, UMSU also accepts international students from several countries in Asia and Africa.
Currently, 117 international students are studying at UMSU. Their presence contributes to creating a more diverse academic environment on campus.
Meanwhile, UMSU continues construction of its Integrated Campus IV in Saentis Village, Percut Sei Tuan Subdistrict, Deli Serdang Regency. The campus is being built on a 25-hectare site and is planned to become one of the modern and integrated education centers.
The development of Campus IV includes not only teaching and learning facilities but also various supporting facilities. UMSU plans to provide sports facilities and an environmental research center as part of the integrated campus concept.Construction work is continuing, with UMSU targeting the operation of some facilities at the Integrated Campus IV beginning in January 2027.
The development of Campus IV is also linked to Muhammadiyah's agenda in North Sumatra. The campus infrastructure is being prepared to support the 49th Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah Congress, which is scheduled to be held in North Sumatra in 2027.The North Sumatra Provincial Government's support for the construction of Campus IV and the allocation of a special scholarship quota for UMSU students are part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between the regional government and the university. With the number of UMSU students continuing to grow, the support is expected to help expand access to higher education while advancing the development of higher education infrastructure in North Sumatra.
