ENHANCED ROAD SAFETY PROGRAM: A fatal collision involving a passenger bus and a truck on the Pekanbaru–Dumai Toll Road prompted PT Hutama Karya to strengthen its road safety programs to reduce the risk of microsleep-related accidents and improve motorists' safety awareness.

JAKARTA | INDATANEWS.COM- PT Hutama Karya (Persero) has intensified its road safety programs across the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS), particularly along the Pekanbaru–Dumai (Permai) Toll Road, following a fatal traffic accident involving a passenger bus and a truck that claimed the lives of two bus passengers.

The tragic accident occurred on Tuesday morning, July 7, 2026, when a commercial passenger bus crashed into the rear of a truck traveling in the same direction on the Pekanbaru–Dumai Toll Road. According to the Traffic Police Highway Patrol (PJR), the collision was caused by the bus driver's microsleep, a brief episode of sleep that occurred while driving.

The incident once again highlights the critical importance of maintaining full concentration while driving on toll roads. Long-distance journeys often reduce drivers' alertness, particularly when fatigue or drowsiness sets in. Even a few seconds of microsleep can lead to devastating traffic accidents with fatal consequences.

PT Hutama Karya Regional Executive Vice President for Central Sumatra, Untung Joko Ristyono, expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

"On behalf of Hutama Karya, we extend our sincere condolences to the families of the victims over this tragic traffic accident that claimed lives," Untung said on Tuesday afternoon.

Road Safety Measures Intensified Across Toll Road Network

Untung emphasized that Hutama Karya continues to strengthen its road safety initiatives as part of the company's commitment to reducing traffic accidents. Particular attention is being given to nighttime crashes and rear-end collisions, which are often linked to declining driver alertness.

According to him, all toll roads operated by Hutama Karya have been equipped with road safety facilities that comply with applicable technical standards and government regulations. These include traffic signs, pavement markings, delineators, guardrails, and other supporting safety infrastructure designed to ensure the safety, security, and comfort of toll road users.

"All toll roads under Hutama Karya's management are fully equipped with traffic signs, road markings, delineators, guardrails, and other road safety facilities in accordance with prevailing technical standards and regulations to provide safe and comfortable travel for motorists," he said.

Focus on Preventing Microsleep and ODOL Violations

In addition to maintaining road infrastructure, Hutama Karya has intensified a series of preventive measures aimed at reducing traffic accidents. A major focus is the prevention of microsleep-related incidents through routine checks on drivers' physical condition and the roadworthiness of vehicles before they enter the toll road.

The company also conducts preventive safety campaigns at toll gates, where personnel provide motorists with important safety reminders before they begin their journey. Safety messages are continuously delivered through public address systems at toll plazas and patrol vehicles, encouraging drivers to obey speed limits, maintain safe following distances, and remain fully alert while driving.

As part of its broader road safety strategy, Hutama Karya regularly inspects vehicle rear lights to ensure that all lighting systems function properly. This initiative is intended to reduce the risk of nighttime accidents by improving vehicle visibility on the toll road.

At the same time, the company has stepped up inspections of vehicles violating Over Dimension Over Loading (ODOL) regulations to ensure compliance with vehicle dimension and weight limits established under national safety standards.

"We also conduct rear light inspections, carry out ODOL vehicle checks, install road safety banners and information boards at strategic locations, broadcast regular road safety messages through radio announcements, and deploy management night shifts to strengthen supervision during high-risk operating hours," Untung explained.

Beyond vehicle inspections, Hutama Karya continues to install various road safety information media along its toll road network. The company also regularly airs public safety announcements through radio broadcasts while enhancing overnight operational supervision through dedicated management shifts to improve monitoring during nighttime traffic.

REMINDER NOTIFICATION ENCOURAGED: PT Hutama Karya encourages motorists to take breaks at designated rest areas whenever they feel fatigued and to activate the Reminder Notification feature in the Mozy app to help prevent microsleep while driving. (PHOTO: Doc. Hutama Karya)

Drivers Urged to Rest When Feeling Fatigued

Hutama Karya once again urged all motorists not to continue driving when experiencing fatigue or drowsiness. Drivers are encouraged to stop at the nearest rest area to take adequate breaks before resuming their journey.

The company also recommends that toll road users activate the Reminder Notification feature available in the Mozy application. The feature periodically reminds drivers to take breaks while also providing information on nearby rest areas, current traffic conditions, and other travel services available along the route.

"Through the Mozy application, users can also access information on the nearest rest areas, real-time traffic conditions, and various travel services. All organizational units are instructed to ensure that every safety program is implemented consistently, responsibly, and sustainably. Safety is a shared responsibility and must remain the highest priority in every operational activity. Salam SETUJU - Selamat Sampai Tujuan (Arrive Safely at Your Destination)," Untung concluded.

Commitment to Building a Stronger Road Safety Culture

Hutama Karya believes that these comprehensive initiatives will strengthen the culture of road safety across the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road network while helping reduce the number of traffic accidents. The company emphasized that safe travel depends not only on modern infrastructure and well-maintained toll road facilities, but also on the discipline and responsibility of every road user to obey traffic regulations and remain physically fit throughout their journey.
