MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM ~ A values-based program run by the At-Taqwa Mosque at Universitas Medan Area (UMA) is considered an important factor in strengthening communication and improving the performance of lecturers within the academic environment.

The assessment was presented by a master's student from Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara (UINSU), Ari Oldwin Sitorus, during his thesis proposal defense on Wednesday (March 4, 2026) at the Dakwah Campus in Medan.

During his presentation, Ari Oldwin explained that the program run by the At-Taqwa Mosque at Universitas Medan Area has not yet reached its maximum potential in influencing the professional performance of lecturers and staff.

Several challenges remain, including difficulties in internalizing Islamic communication principles in daily professional activities. In addition, varying interpretations of these principles among lecturers may reduce the program's effectiveness.

"Therefore, a scientific study on the application of Islamic communication principles is necessary to improve the performance quality of lecturers and staff through the At-Taqwa Mosque program," Ari Oldwin said.

Mosque-Based Development Programs

According to the researcher, the management of the Masjid At‑Taqwa Universitas Medan Area has implemented several initiatives aimed at strengthening the academic community.

These include regular religious lectures, social programs supporting orphaned children, and initiatives to integrate Islamic values into professional duties.

The routine religious study sessions aim to deepen religious understanding while encouraging personal development and professional responsibility. For this purpose, the mosque management regularly invites experienced speakers who provide practical insights on addressing professional and social challenges.

Meanwhile, the orphan support program seeks to strengthen social awareness among lecturers and staff while promoting solidarity and charitable values in Islam.

"The integration of Islamic values focuses on integrity, discipline, and responsibility in carrying out duties as educators and public servants," Ari Oldwin added.

Humanistic Approach to Religious Programs

Communication scholar Dr. Zainun, M.A., from Universitas Medan Area said that managing religious programs within an academic community should adopt a humanistic approach aligned with Islamic communication principles.

These principles include truthfulness in speech and action, purposeful communication, gentleness, respect, and the ability to create positive and lasting impacts.

"These values should be implemented in everyday interactions within Universitas Medan Area," he said.

Zainun, who also serves as chairman of the mosque management board (BKM) of the At-Taqwa Mosque, stressed that such principles are not limited to academic settings but should also be applied across wider society.

"This attitude and behavior should become a daily culture within the community. Wallahu a'lam," he concluded. (IDNC)
