Medan Mayor Calls for Greater Tolerance at Vesakh Celebration

VESAKS 2570 BE CELEBRATION: Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas attends the Vesakh 2570 BE celebration at the Tiara Convention Center on Sunday, May 10, 2026, while encouraging residents to strengthen tolerance and unity in diversity.

MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM Rico Waas reaffirmed the Medan City Government's commitment to fostering an inclusive, harmonious, and tolerant society amid the city's diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.

The statement was delivered during the Vesakh 2570 BE celebration themed "Harmony and Co-existence," organized by Yayasan Vihara Maitreya Medan at the Tiara Convention Center on Sunday, May 10, 2026.

Rico Waas attended the event alongside Chairwoman of TP PKK Medan, Airin Rico Waas. In addition to commemorating Vesakh Day, the event also marked International Mother's Day and the 22nd anniversary of the organizing foundation.

In his remarks, Rico Waas urged residents to preserve peace and brotherhood despite differences in ethnicity, religion, and cultural backgrounds.

"We live together with different religions, ethnicities, skin colors, and ancestries. However, we hope the people of Medan will continue to live peacefully, respect one another, and support each other," he said.

According to him, a peaceful society can only be achieved through mutual respect and solidarity. He also warned against allowing conflicts and divisions to grow within society.

"We often witness disputes, insults, and even wars in various parts of the world. Therefore, Vesakh should become a moment for us to create peace within ourselves and in our social lives," Rico Waas stated.

City Government Commits to Working With Communities

The Medan mayor emphasized that the city administration considers itself part of the community and remains committed to working alongside all religious groups to build a better city.

"We are brothers and sisters to all residents of Medan. The people's difficulties are also our difficulties," he said.

Rico Waas also expressed appreciation for the consistency of Yayasan Vihara Maitreya Medan in organizing religious and social activities for more than two decades.

He noted that sustaining such activities for 22 years requires strong dedication, commitment, and a deep sense of community service.

"We thank everyone who continues to spread the spirit of kindness and social care within society," he added.

Vesakh Celebration Highlights Tolerance Values

At the conclusion of his speech, Rico Waas officially opened the Vesakh 2570 BE celebration and expressed hope that the values of peace and tolerance would continue to flourish in Medan.

Several religious and community leaders also attended the event, including Venerable Man Sheng, Venerable Hui Xian, Venerable Xin Shou, Venerable Cueh Lien, Buddhist Guidance official of the North Sumatra Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs Sukasdi, Chairwoman of Vihara Tri Amal Group Suhelen Suria, Chairman of Walubi Medan Arman Chandra, as well as representatives from the Medan City Government.
