MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM Medan Mayor, Rico Waas, has called on members of the North Sumatra Regional House of Representatives (DPRD Sumut) from Electoral Districts Sumut 1 and 2 to strengthen collaboration in supporting strategic development programs in the city.

He delivered the statement during a meeting with DPRD members as part of the presentation of recess visit findings on Friday (May 22, 2026) in Meeting Room I of Medan City Hall. Rico emphasized that urban development can only be accelerated through strong synergy between the executive and legislative branches.

The meeting was attended by several DPRD members, including Benny Sihotang, Landen Marbun, H. Ahmad Darwis, Jumadi, Mustafa Kamil, M. Faisal, and Meryl Rouly Saragih.

Rico Waas highlighted the progress of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Mebidang project, a major public transportation system connecting Medan, Binjai, and Deli Serdang. The national strategic project is currently expanding from five to twelve routes and is targeted for completion next year.

"The construction is currently underway along the Sisingamangaraja corridor toward Gatot Subroto. We hope the public will gradually shift from private vehicles to public transportation," he said.

Sustainable Development and Environmental Commitment

The mayor reaffirmed the city government's commitment to environmentally friendly development. For every tree affected by infrastructure projects, the administration plans to plant up to 61,000 new trees across various areas of Medan.

Teladan Stadium Renovation and National Event Readiness

In the sports sector, Medan is accelerating the renovation of Teladan Stadium under strict supervision to meet international standards. The venue is being prepared to host major tournaments, including the AFF Cup.

In addition, Medan is preparing to host the upcoming national working conference of APEKSI, which is expected to bring together around 98 mayors from across Indonesia, along with national figures.

DPRD Appreciates District Involvement and Focus on North Medan

DPRD members praised the mayor's initiative to involve district heads more actively in recess activities, allowing citizens greater opportunities to voice their concerns.

North Medan also remains a priority area, particularly regarding housing, healthcare services, as well as social and security issues.
