MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - Medan is strengthening its position as a potential host city for international football tournaments, with the historic Stadion Teladan Medan being considered as a possible venue for the AFF Cup following an inspection by the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) together with representatives of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF).
The Medan City Government has expressed strong commitment to supporting the potential selection of Stadion Teladan as an international match venue. Mayor Rico Waas voiced optimism that the stadium already meets many of the required standards set by the AFF.
"The pitch, grass quality, floodlighting system, and player benches are largely in line with the required standards," said Rico Waas during his visit to Stadion Teladan Medan on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

The Medan municipal administration continues to accelerate modernization efforts at Stadion Teladan to fully comply with international tournament requirements. A key focus is the expansion and completion of spectator seating capacity.

Rico Waas emphasized that the seating installation would be fully completed rather than partially implemented.
"Initially, only partial seating was planned, but I have instructed that the entire seating capacity be completed. This stadium must be fully experienced by the public, as it is a source of pride for our city," he stated.
The city is also prioritizing safety standards and infrastructure improvements essential for hosting international events.

Beyond the main stadium, Medan is also preparing training facilities for participating teams, with Cadika Field and Kebun Bunga Field serving as the primary sites.
According to the mayor, Cadika Field is already in excellent condition, with high-quality turf and functional supporting facilities, including locker rooms, requiring only minor aesthetic improvements in the surrounding area.

Meanwhile, Kebun Bunga Field is in the final phase of pitch optimization and is expected to be fully operational soon.
Rico Waas also called on the public to support Medan's bid to host the AFF Cup, emphasizing the importance of strong community engagement and full stadium attendance should the city be selected. He expressed hope that successful hosting could pave the way for more international sporting events in the future.
"Let us show how strong football enthusiasm is in Medan. With strong support, more international events will come to Stadion Teladan," he added. (IDNC)
