MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU), Prof. Dr. Akrim, M.Pd., surprised new students at the UMSU Ikatan Mahasiswa Muhammadiyah (IMM) Mass Masa Ta'aruf (Masta) event by presenting laptops and tablets as gifts.
The event was held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at the UMSU Campus on Jalan Muchtar Basri in Medan and was attended by 6,027 new students. Also present were Deputy Governor of North Sumatra H. Surya, B.Sc., Chairman of the North Sumatra Regional Leadership of Muhammadiyah, Prof. Dr. Hasyimsyah Nasution, M.A., as well as officials and Head of the Research and Technology Division of the Central Executive Board of IMM, Muh. Akmal Ahsan, M.Pd.The 2026 IMM UMSU Mass Masta event was not only aimed at introducing new students to the university environment. It also provided them with an opportunity to gain motivation, build character, develop their potential, and understand the role of student organizations in academic and social life.
Deputy Governor of North Sumatra Surya reminded UMSU's new students in his speech not to make an academic degree the sole objective of their university education. He said students should equip themselves with experience, social awareness, a sense of responsibility, achievements, and leadership skills.
Surya described Masa Ta'aruf as an important moment for new students to become familiar with the university environment while beginning to build their character and develop their individual potential. Therefore, he encouraged the students to make the most of the various activities during this period."Make the most of this time. Do not come to university merely to obtain a degree and knowledge. We must also gain experience and social values, take action, and assume responsibility. Build achievements as well as compassion for others," Surya said.
He explained that students needed experience outside the classroom to strengthen their abilities for social life. Activities within student organizations, he said, could provide an opportunity to develop these abilities.Surya also encouraged UMSU's new students to actively participate in student organizations that provide opportunities for learning, collaboration, and social engagement. He cited the Ikatan Mahasiswa Muhammadiyah as an organization that could support students in developing their character and leadership skills.
"IMM will be a long journey for UMSU's young generation to strengthen their Islamic faith and commitment to society. This is highly important for the development of North Sumatra and Indonesia. It is not only about being academically intelligent, but also about becoming socially competent, more courageous, responsible, and innovative," Surya said.According to Surya, the development of academic abilities must go hand in hand with character building. He expressed hope that UMSU's new students would develop courage, social responsibility, and innovation so they could later contribute to society.
Among those receiving laptops were students whose dates of birth coincided with Muhammadiyah's founding date, November 18. The rector also presented gifts to students who actively participated in various activities during the Mass Masta event.
One of the recipients was Vanisya Humaira Wimas, a new student at UMSU's Faculty of Economics and Business and a former participant in the renowned singing competition The Voice Kids. Vanisya performed "Never Enough" by Loren Allred and received a tablet from the UMSU rector in recognition of her performance.Similar recognition was given to Maily Chung, an accomplished student from UMSU's Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. Maily performed the monologue "Balada Sumarah," which attracted considerable attention at the event.
The presentation of the gifts was one of the surprises at the event attended by thousands of new students. Beyond recognizing the participants, the moment also demonstrated the university leadership's attention to students' creativity, courage, and potential from the beginning of their university education.In his speech, Akrim expressed hope that participants in the UMSU Mass Masta event would develop into cadres of the Islamic community, the nation, and the Muhammadiyah organization. At the same time, he urged students to develop their personal potential and play a role in the development of North Sumatra.
"We sincerely hope that IMM cadres will become cadres of the Islamic community, the nation, and the Muhammadiyah organization, participate in the development of North Sumatra, and contribute to our society," Akrim said.This aspiration was an important part of the messages conveyed during the Mass Masta event. The new students were encouraged not only to pursue academic achievements but also to develop character, organizational experience, and social responsibility.
Akmal provided the new students with additional perspectives on the role of the younger generation amid various social changes. Students were encouraged not merely to absorb information but also to think critically, analyze social issues, and participate in finding solutions.
Chairman of the North Sumatra Regional Leadership of Muhammadiyah Hasyimsyah Nasution also attended the event. Akmal Ahsan, M.Pd.; Chairman of the Medan City IMM Branch, Immawan M. Rais Prayogo, S.M.; and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Immawan Bukhari Muslim, took part in the joint strike of the Tagading drum.
The opening ceremony was accompanied by various entertainment performances. The new students enjoyed dance and singing performances accompanied by an orchestra and the UMSU band.The 2026 UMSU Mass Masta event thus became an important first moment for the 6,027 new students to become familiar with the academic environment, student organizations, and the values of social engagement. Through the event, UMSU also encouraged students to develop their abilities comprehensively, both academically and in social life.
The messages delivered by various figures at the event emphasized the importance of balancing academic achievement, organizational experience, social engagement, and character development.
