COMMITMENT TO LOCAL FILM INDUSTRY: Mayor Rico Waas together with producer Dewi Budiarti and director Egi Fauzi Fahreza reaffirm support for Medan’s creative and film development.

MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM The Mayor of Medan, Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas, has expressed strong appreciation for the newly released film Samudera, a fully local production created by filmmakers from Medan, North Sumatra. The film is being seen as a milestone in the region's growing creative industry.

The premiere took place on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Sun Plaza Medan, attended by the mayor along with several senior municipal officials and district heads.

"A Work of Medan, for Medan"

Mayor Rico Waas emphasized that Samudera represents the strength of Medan's creative community.

"The film was produced in Medan, performed by people from Medan, and entirely completed in Medan. This makes it a collective work of our city," he said.

He further noted that the production reflects how local talent can deliver high-quality cinematic work without relying on external resources.

Creative Economy Continues to Grow

Rico highlighted the film as evidence of Medan's expanding creative ecosystem, where collaboration among local filmmakers is increasingly capable of producing professional-level projects.

He also extended special recognition to producer Dewi Budiarti, praising her dedication and leadership in bringing the project to completion.

Stories from the Coastal Region and Social Reality

The film portrays real-life conditions in Medan's northern coastal area, which faces various social and economic challenges.

"The film shows life in North Medan with all its complex issues," the mayor explained.

He added that Medan still holds many untold stories that could be further explored through film.

Medan as a Source of Endless Stories

Rico expressed confidence that the city possesses vast creative potential, encouraging young artists to continue developing film and music projects inspired by local realities.

"Medan has so many stories. What we see today is only a small part of them," he said.

Environmental and Social Messages Highlighted

Film director Egi Fauzi Fahreza stated that Samudera is not only intended as entertainment but also carries strong social messaging.

The film addresses the destruction of marine ecosystems caused by unsustainable fishing practices, such as trawl nets.

"We have seen coral reefs destroyed over large areas. These are actually vital habitats for fish larvae," he said.

In addition, the film delivers moral messages encouraging young people to avoid drugs, strengthen their character, and contribute positively to their communities. (IDNC)
