MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - Hundreds of cyclists from various regions participated in the Medan Mayor's BMX Drag Bike Championship, competing for the Mayor's Cup at Jalan Masjid Raya, Medan City, on Saturday, August 1, 2026. The competition served as a platform to nurture young athletes and identify promising BMX talents who could represent Medan on national and international stages in the future.
The Medan Mayor's BMX Drag Bike Championship brought together participants from various age categories. The enthusiasm shown by young riders reflected the growing public interest in BMX cycling while also marking an important moment in revitalizing the development and coaching system for the sport in Medan.The Head of the Medan Youth and Sports Agency (Kadispora), T. Chairuniza, officially opened the championship as a representative of Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas. In his speech, he stated that sporting competitions require support from many parties to produce athletes who possess not only technical abilities but also strong character."This championship proves that sports require commitment, cooperation, and continuous opportunities for competition. Sports are not only a place where achievements are created but also an environment where athletes' character is built," he said.
He explained that sports provide many important values for the younger generation, including discipline, hard work, fairness, courage, and the determination to never give up. These values, he added, are essential foundations for athletes to overcome challenges and achieve success.The official, who is widely known by the nickname Yudhi, expressed hope that the Medan Mayor's BMX Drag Bike Championship would provide riders with opportunities to improve their abilities, gain more competition experience, and develop a strong competitive spirit.
"Through competitions like this, athletes will emerge in the future who can bring Medan's name to provincial, national, and even international levels," he said.He further emphasized that the Medan City Government would continue supporting sports development through sustainable youth coaching programs, organizing various competitions, and strengthening cooperation with the Medan branch of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI), sports associations, communities, and schools.
"The more opportunities athletes receive to develop, the greater the chance of creating new achievements. I hope all participants compete with enthusiasm, maintain fairness, and view every competition as an opportunity to learn and improve their abilities. Winning is certainly a great achievement, but maintaining good attitude during competition has even greater value," he stated.
The Sultan of Deli, Seripaduka Tuanku Sultan Mahmud Aria Lamantjiji Perkasa Alam Shah, who also attended the event, praised the organization of the Medan Mayor's BMX Drag Bike Championship. He expressed hope that sporting events like this would provide young people with a positive environment to develop their talents and stay away from negative behavior.
"I congratulate all young participants. Maintain fairness, discipline, and safety because this event is being held in the Masjid Raya area. I hope positive activities like this can keep the younger generation away from alcohol, drugs, and other negative influences. Through sports, we aim to create a healthy and accomplished young generation," he said.Meanwhile, Chairman of KONI Medan, Aswindy Fachrizal, expressed hope that the Medan Mayor's BMX Drag Bike Championship could become a regular event so that the development of BMX athletes in Medan could continue sustainably.
According to Aswindy, the availability of proper training facilities is one of the most important factors in developing BMX sports. He hopes Medan City will eventually have a dedicated BMX cross track, allowing athletes to receive better training facilities and participate in competitions under more suitable conditions.
"We hope this championship can continue sustainably. Together with the Medan Youth and Sports Agency (Dispora), we want to establish or provide a BMX cross track in the future. Currently, Medan still lacks adequate facilities for this discipline. After this championship ends, we will once again hold discussions with the BMX community and hope for support from Dispora and the Medan City Government so that BMX sports can continue to grow," he explained.
Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the Medan Mayor's BMX Drag Bike Championship, Rico Amrizal, explained that the competition was initiated due to concerns among the BMX community regarding the limited number of official events held in Medan. This situation had resulted in many young people lacking proper opportunities to develop their hobbies and abilities.
"Initially, we organized this event to provide an alternative for young people, especially children who enjoy cycling. Since BMX events are rarely held in Medan, we found that many teenagers eventually turned to illegal street racing, similar to illegal motorcycle racing," Rico told Tribun Medan.Rico explained that the BMX community in Medan is actually very active. However, most previous activities focused on the BMX cross discipline, whose development has been restricted due to the lack of a proper racing track.
He recalled that Medan previously had a BMX track located in the Taman Cadika area. However, due to its current condition, the facility can no longer be used, causing BMX cross competitions to be suspended for an extended period."BMX cross events in Medan are currently very difficult to organize because there is no suitable racing track. Previously, we had a track at Taman Cadika, but it can no longer be used today. Therefore, BMX clubs in Medan agreed to organize a BMX Drag Bike event as an alternative so athletes can continue participating in competitions," he said.
According to Rico, the race track was adjusted to the conditions of Jalan Masjid Raya, which has a length of approximately 100 to 150 meters. The organizing committee also limited participants to a maximum of 30 riders in each class to ensure the competition was conducted in an orderly and competitive manner."We hope BMX clubs and communities can encourage young people to stay away from negative activities. Instead of spending their time on harmful things, they can develop their interests and talents through sports like this," Rico said.
He expressed confidence that the event could produce potential athletes who would later receive further development and compete at national and international levels."We want to discover young talents who can be developed in the future. BMX is a sport that is also included in the Olympic Games. Therefore, athletes have great opportunities to continue improving and achieving success," he explained.
Rico also hoped the event could revive cycling culture within the community, particularly among the younger generation, who today spend significant amounts of time on digital devices."We want to show the public that cycling is a very positive activity. We hope interest in cycling will continue to grow because many children today spend more time with mobile phones and computer games," Rico concluded.
During the first edition of the championship, a total of twelve competition categories were contested, including Push Bike for children aged 3–4 years, Push Bike 5–6 years, Push Bike 7–8 years, Push Bike 9–10 years, BMX 11–12 years, BMX 13–14 years, BMX 15–16 years, Men Junior, Men Elite, Master 40, Master 50, Women Open, and Women Under.
The high level of participation was seen as a positive signal for the development of BMX cycling in Medan. The championship is expected to become an initial step toward building a sustainable athlete development system and producing young BMX riders capable of achieving sporting success for the region in the future.The Medan Mayor's BMX Drag Bike Championship has demonstrated that competitive events can serve as an important foundation for discovering and developing young sporting talents. With continued support from the government, sports organizations, communities, and schools, BMX in Medan is expected to grow into a stronger and more competitive discipline.
