Gen Z Dominates the Electorate: Time for the Young Generation to Lead PKB Deli Serdang

DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM ~ The growing dominance of Generation Z and Millennial voters in Deli Serdang Regency is reshaping the local political landscape, marking a significant shift in political dynamics and leadership patterns. This trend also opens wider opportunities for young people to take on strategic roles within political parties, including the National Awakening Party (PKB) in Deli Serdang.

Taufiqurrahman, a Political Science master's student at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), said the 2024 elections clearly demonstrated the rising political influence of younger generations. He noted that Generation Z and Millennials now account for more than 50 percent of the electorate, giving them decisive power in shaping future political directions.

Young Voters Reshape Political Strategy

According to Taufiqurrahman, the dominance of young voters is not only transforming election campaigns but also forcing political parties to rethink their leadership structures. He described young voters as rational, critical, and highly responsive to authentic, progressive leaders with strong integrity.

This shift compels political parties to adapt their strategies in order to remain relevant and maintain trust among the new generation of voters.

PKB Faces Leadership Regeneration Pressure

Within the PKB Deli Serdang, pressure for leadership regeneration is increasingly evident, particularly ahead of the election for the Chair of the Regional Executive Board (DPC). Party renewal is no longer viewed as an option but as a necessity to ensure long-term political relevance.

Taufiqurrahman emphasized that PKB must seize this moment to strengthen its support base among young voters. Parties led by younger figures, he said, have a greater opportunity to build closer and more sustainable connections with the emerging electorate.

Julyadi Pulungan Represents New Political Wave

One example of this generational shift is Julyadi Pulungan, who is seen as a representative of a new political wave within PKB Deli Serdang. He is bringing fresh energy into the party's internal dynamics.

Currently, he holds several strategic positions, including Chairperson of Karang Taruna Deli Serdang, Secretary of the PKB Deli Serdang DPC, and member of the PKB North Sumatra DPW. These roles highlight his organizational experience and political capacity.

His combination of youth and experience strengthens his ability to build coalitions and respond adaptively to public needs. According to Taufiqurrahman, his presence could significantly increase PKB's appeal among young voters ahead of the 2029 elections.

"Young people also dominate digital technology and social media as political communication tools. This makes political interaction faster, more transparent, and emotionally closer to voters," he said.

Challenges and the Future of PKB

Taufiqurrahman stressed that PKB Deli Serdang faces major challenges, both in increasing voter support and in ensuring sustainable cadre development within the party. At the same time, the party must strengthen public trust through modern and adaptive leadership.

The election of the DPC chair is therefore seen as a strategic moment that will not only determine internal power structures but also shape the party's future direction. The dominance of young voters clearly signals that political success depends on the ability to adapt to generational change.

"Young leaders with experience, competence, and a clear vision are the answer to these challenges, offering a more fresh, inclusive, and future-oriented political direction," he concluded. (IDNC)
