BATAM | INDATANEWS.COM – The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) has once again demonstrated its firm commitment to safeguarding national maritime borders after intercepting an attempt to smuggle 14 illegal migrant workers to Malaysia via sea routes in Karimun waters.
The operation was launched following a public tip-off regarding suspected illegal crossings in the region. Acting on the information, a Quick Reaction Team from the Kodaeral IV Command under the Tanjung Balai Karimun Naval Base (Lanal TBK) began mobilization on Sunday, May 3, 2026.
The coordinated response reflects the Navy's continued vigilance against transnational crimes in Indonesia's maritime territory.

High-Speed Chase at Sea
At around 01:00 local time (WIB), the team detected a suspicious speedboat in the Takong Iyu waters, Karimun. The vessel, painted in red and black and powered by a 200-horsepower engine, was believed to be transporting the 14 migrants illegally toward Malaysia.
The operation had begun earlier at 21:35 WIB, when the team first received intelligence and moved into position. By 23:35 WIB, the suspect vessel was sighted. When the boat operator ignored repeated orders to stop, naval officers fired warning shots before successfully halting the vessel.

Suspects and Legal Proceedings Underway
Onboard were the boat operator (locally known as tekong), identified by the initials W (48), a crew member A (37), and 14 individuals from various regions across Indonesia—nine men and five women.
Initial assessments confirmed that all passengers were in stable health. Authorities also suspect the operator may have been under the influence of narcotics during the incident. The migrants reportedly paid between IDR 5 million and IDR 13 million each for the illegal crossing.
All individuals have been taken to the Tanjung Balai Karimun Naval Base for further investigation. The crew members are expected to be handed over to the Karimun Water Police (Satpolairud), while the migrant workers will be transferred to the relevant agency, P4MI, for further processing.
The operation aligns with directives from Chief of the Indonesian Navy (Kasal), Admiral TNI Dr. Muhammad Ali, emphasizing intensified action against human smuggling and cross-border crimes.
The TNI AL reaffirmed its commitment to increasing maritime patrols in border waters to ensure Indonesia's sovereignty and security remain protected. (IDNC)
