MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM ~ Italian tourists Franco Sonanini and his wife Marina Morello expressed their delight over the warm hospitality and friendliness of the people in Indonesia.
"The Indonesians are very friendly, warm-hearted, and welcoming," Franco said on February 21, 2026, at the Grand City Hall Hotel in Medan, North Sumatra.
The couple shared their excitement about their first 10-day journey across Northern Sumatra, which began at Kuala Namu International Airport, passed through various tourist destinations, and concluded in Medan.

Franco and Marina arrived from Thailand at Kuala Namu International Airport in Deli Serdang, about 20 kilometers from Medan. After immigration and luggage collection, they were picked up by a local guide and driver who took them through palm oil and rubber plantations to Bukit Lawang.
Along the way, they stopped at V-Mart restaurant, where manager Mr. Dodi introduced them to Sumatra's specialty coffees. Franco chose a cappuccino, while Marina opted for ice cream—a choice they highly enjoyed.
"This cappuccino tastes amazing. It's the best drink," Franco praised.

The couple then continued to Bukit Lawang, staying at The Sam's Bungalow.
Surrounded by cool, fresh air and the gentle sounds of flowing water, they spent three days immersed in the natural beauty of the area.

Climbing Gunung Sibayak and Encounters with Locals
Next, they traveled to Berastagi, famously known as the "City of Fruits," to prepare for the climb of the exotic Gunung Sibayak. Despite heavy rain, they continued the ascent.
Wet clothes did not dampen their enthusiasm. The rain added a unique charm to the natural surroundings. Along the way, locals greeted them warmly, some speaking English, while others simply smiled-a reflection of the openness of the local Karo community.

At the summit, Franco and Marina enjoyed sweeping views of green landscapes, scattered villages, and the distinctive sulfur scent of the volcanic crater. Later, they visited the Berastagi fruit market, where the warmth of the people left another lasting impression.
"It's wonderful. People are very open and greet visitors warmly. That's very pleasant for tourists," Marina said.

The journey continued to Lake Toba, with a visit to Pulau Samosir, including a climb up Holbung Hill and encounters with visitors from other regions.
"Is this typical of Indonesians? Everyone is so friendly to us," Marina said, amazed.

"This journey was exciting and beautiful. It's the best trip we've ever taken," Marina concluded.
