MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM – The Manpower Office of Medan City (Dinas Ketenagakerjaan Kota Medan) continues to strengthen its strategy to reduce unemployment by expanding legal and structured overseas employment placements. The initiative aims to provide safer, lawful, and more productive job opportunities for residents of Medan.
As of May 2026, a total of 1,017 workers from Medan have been officially placed abroad through regulated procedures in various destination countries, including Malaysia, Japan, Middle Eastern countries, other parts of Asia, Australia, and several European nations.
Legal Overseas Employment as a Key Strategy
The acting head of the department, Ramaddan, emphasized that the public is actively encouraged to take advantage of global labor market opportunities. However, he stressed that all placement processes must be conducted exclusively through officially registered overseas employment agencies (P3MI).
According to him, job opportunities are available across multiple sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, construction, and various service industries. "Proper preparation is essential—covering skills, documentation, language proficiency, and understanding of official procedures," Ramaddan said.
Strengthening Oversight and Coordination
To improve placement quality, the Medan Manpower Office held an evaluation meeting on May 6, 2026, involving P3MI agencies and Japanese language training institutions. The meeting focused on enhancing coordination and strengthening supervision of overseas recruitment processes.
Focus on Protection and Transparency
The agency also urged the public to rely solely on official information sources. Residents are advised to obtain verified updates directly from the Medan Manpower Office or Indonesia's national migrant worker protection agency, BP2MI, to avoid illegal recruitment practices.
Financial Support and Training Programs
As part of its development strategy, the Medan Manpower Office is planning a collaboration with banking institutions to introduce an advance financing system for departure costs. The program is expected to assist applicants seeking employment in Japan who face financial barriers at the start of the process.
In addition, training programs and partnerships with recruitment agencies will continue to be expanded to strengthen job seekers' competencies and improve access to safe overseas employment.
Through these measures, the City of Medan aims not only to expand employment opportunities but also to ensure that overseas labor migration remains safe, legal, and sustainable in the long term. (IDNC)
