DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM - The Medan Estate Village administration has promptly responded to residents' complaints about the condition of the drainage system along Jalan Peratun in Dusun III, Medan Estate Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang. Together with the Percut Sei Tuan District administration and personnel from the Indonesian Military (TNI) and National Police (Polri), the village administration carried out the normalization of a drainage canal stretching approximately 900 meters on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
The operation, which ran from 10:30 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. WIB, was part of the TNI Community Service (Bakti TNI) program and also aimed to strengthen cross-sector cooperation in maintaining and keeping the environment clean. The team removed accumulated waste and sediment that had obstructed water flow along the drainage canal on Jalan Peratun for an extended period.
The operation was also a joint preventive measure by the government and relevant agencies to reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. Increasing sediment buildup had reduced the canal's drainage capacity, causing water to overflow during heavy rain and potentially reach surrounding areas.
Medan Estate Village Head Asdat Lubis said the village administration initiated the normalization work after residents directly submitted complaints about the condition of the drainage system along Jalan Peratun. According to him, the administration immediately followed up on the residents' concerns by coordinating with the district administration, TNI and Polri.
"This is a response to the concerns raised by the residents. They came directly to us and conveyed their complaints. The village administration is making efforts to respond by coordinating with the district administration, TNI and Polri," Asdat said.
Asdat explained that the drainage canal being normalized is approximately 900 meters long. The area had frequently experienced overflowing water during heavy rainfall. Accumulated waste and sediment were among the factors obstructing the flow of water.
"This canal has been heavily clogged by accumulated waste and sediment for quite some time. As a result, the water cannot flow properly, causing the canal to frequently overflow when it rains," he explained.
The Medan Estate Village administration considers the condition of the drainage system an area requiring special attention so that the canal can fully resume its intended function. In addition to reducing the risk of overflow, the normalization work is expected to help maintain the cleanliness of the surrounding environment and improve the comfort of residents traveling through the Jalan Peratun area.
The operation focused not only on removing sediment but also formed part of a joint effort to raise public awareness of the importance of maintaining drainage channels. The village administration hopes residents will continue to help preserve the condition of the canal after the normalization work is completed.
During the normalization work, the team encountered several obstacles because some structures had previously been built over the drainage canal. These structures made it difficult for equipment to access the area and hampered the team's efforts to remove sediment that had accumulated inside the channel.
The problem was gradually resolved after the owners voluntarily dismantled their structures. This gave the team greater room to carry out excavation and remove material that had previously obstructed the flow of water.
"Alhamdulillah, the structures over the canal have been dismantled by their owners. This has greatly facilitated the normalization work, allowing the sediment that has been obstructing the water flow to be removed," he said.
Asdat expressed his appreciation to residents for supporting the normalization work, particularly the owners of the structures who were willing to dismantle them. In his view, public support is an important component in enabling the village administration to address drainage problems more effectively.
He emphasized that the Medan Estate Village administration would continue monitoring the normalization process until all accumulated sediment had been removed. The administration does not want the operation to merely produce a canal that looks clean, but also aims to ensure that the drainage channel can function optimally again.
"This operation will continue until the sediment has been completely removed. We do not want to achieve only a clean appearance; we also want to ensure that the canal functions properly and provides greater safety and comfort for the community," Asdat stressed.
The village administration also hopes that the normalization will have a direct impact on environmental conditions around Jalan Peratun. Improved water flow is expected to reduce the risk of overflow during rainfall, preventing residents from continuing to face flooding caused by impaired drainage.
Several government agencies and security personnel took part in the normalization of the drainage canal along Jalan Peratun. Those present included Percut Sei Tuan District Head M. Kennedy Tarigan, S.IP., M.Si.; Pasiren of Kodim 0201 Medan Major CZI Abdul Halim Pasaribu; Danramil Percut Sei Tuan Major Kav. JTB Sembiring; Medan Estate Village Head Asdat Lubis; representatives of the Deli Serdang Housing and Settlement Agency (Perkim); and members of the village administration. (IDNC)
