Medan Mayor Calls on Students to Reject Online Gambling

MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM – Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas has urged students of Ikatan Pelajar Al Washliyah (IPA) in Medan to firmly reject online gambling, warning that the practice poses a serious threat to the mental health and future of the younger generation.

The statement was delivered on Friday, May 22, 2026, during the inauguration ceremony of IPA Medan City held at the TP PKK Kota Medan building. Hundreds of students attended the event and listened attentively to the mayor's address.

Digital Technology as a Future Opportunity

Mayor Rico Waas emphasized that technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), should be utilized for positive and productive purposes. He stressed that technology must strengthen education and support youth development rather than undermine it.

"Use technology to achieve your goals and dreams. It should not weaken your mindset but enhance your capabilities," he said.

He also called on students to use digital platforms responsibly and avoid negative online influences.

Warning Against Online Gambling and Social Risks

The mayor expressed concern over the growing prevalence of online gambling among students. He urged young people to take a firm stand against other harmful behaviors, including drug abuse, pornography, violence, and school brawls.

The message was strongly welcomed by students in attendance.

Rico Waas even led a spontaneous chant against online gambling: "IPA Kota Medan!"

"We reject online gambling!" the students responded loudly in unison inside the hall.

IPA as a Driver of Change

Beyond the anti-addiction campaign, the mayor encouraged the Ikatan Pelajar Al Washliyah Medan City chapter to become a driving force for social change. He called on the organization to develop programs that foster character building, creativity, and social responsibility among youth.

The event was also attended by Abdul Hafiz, Chairperson of Pimpinan Daerah Al Washliyah Kota Medan; Sari Mulia Situmorang, Chairperson of DPD KNPI Kota Medan; Abdul Latif Hasibuan, Chairperson of IPA Kota Medan; along with other officials. (IDNC)
