BENEFITS OF KETAPANG LEAVES: Supports health and naturally lowers aquarium pH.

MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM ~ The Ketapang tree, commonly found across Southeast Asia, is not only a scenic coastal plant but also a source of versatile leaves with multiple uses. Its oval to elliptical leaves measure 15–25 cm in length and 7–15 cm in width. Young leaves are reddish-brown, turning dark green as they mature.

Small yellowish-green to cream flowers grow in clusters at the branch tips, developing into elongated fruits that turn reddish-brown when ripe. The sturdy, horizontally branching trunk with cracked gray-brown bark makes the tree wind-resistant, ideal for coastal and park landscaping.

Bioactive Compounds and Health Benefits

Ketapang leaves contain flavonoids, tannins, polyphenols, and organic acids. Flavonoids act as antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, supporting heart health and protecting cells from free radicals. Tannins have mild antibacterial properties, aid digestion, and help with minor diarrhea. Polyphenols protect the skin and slow cellular aging.

Organic acids, such as gallic and tannic acids, lower water pH, making the leaves popular in tropical aquariums to mimic natural fish habitats. They also exhibit mild antibacterial effects and slightly tint the water brown.

Uses in Health and Aquariums

Traditionally, 5–10 dried leaves are boiled in 500 ml of water for 10–15 minutes and consumed warm to support digestion, heart health, or minor wound care. The infusion can also be applied as a compress for skin irritations.

For aquarium care, adding 1–2 dried leaves to the tank and leaving them for several days helps regulate pH and provides antibacterial benefits. Leaves should be replaced regularly to maintain water quality.

Caution: Pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with chronic liver or kidney issues, and individuals with low blood pressure should consult a doctor before use. Allergic reactions or interactions with medications are possible.

Conclusion

Ketapang leaves are a versatile natural remedy that supports digestion, skin, and heart health while providing antioxidant and antimicrobial effects. Simultaneously, they naturally improve aquarium water quality-a sustainable solution for health and the environment. (IDNC)
