JAMBI POLICE INVESTIGATE SHOOTING AT MERANGIN POLICE HEADQUARTERS: Jambi Police arrested eight suspects allegedly involved in the attack and shooting at Merangin Police Headquarters. The arrests were made within less than 24 hours of the incident.

JAMBI | INDATANEWS.COM - Jambi Provincial Police have arrested eight suspects accused of attacking and firing shots at Merangin Police Headquarters in Jambi Province. A joint police task force apprehended all eight within less than 24 hours of the incident, which allegedly involved several members of the indigenous Suku Anak Dalam (SAD) community.

Jambi Police provided an update on the investigation during a press conference at the Public Relations Division's (Bidhumas) media centre on Friday, 30 October 2026. The briefing was led by Jambi Police Head of Public Relations, Police Commissioner Erlan Munaji, alongside Deputy Director of Criminal Investigation, Police Commissioner Imam Rachman.

Erlan said Jambi Police had immediately launched an operation in coordination with Merangin Police and personnel from Battalion B Pelopor of the Mobile Brigade Corps (Satbrimob) to investigate the attack.

The joint task force arrested the eight suspects on Thursday, 29 October 2026, in Sungai Ulak Village, Nalo Tantan District, Merangin Regency.

Eight Suspects Arrested, Five Homemade Firearms Seized

The officers arrested eight individuals identified by the initials P, D, J, PJ, PL, JE, SC and B. They also seized five homemade firearms, comprising long-barrelled weapons and locally manufactured firearms known as Kecepek and PCV.

Following their arrests, the suspects and the seized evidence were taken to Jambi Police headquarters for further questioning. Investigators are examining each individual's alleged involvement in the attack and shooting at Merangin Police Headquarters.

The investigation also aims to establish the sequence of events and determine whether the seized firearms were used in the incident.

At the time of the press conference, all eight individuals remained suspects. Their legal status and the subsequent handling of the case will be determined in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Jambi Police Head of Public Relations, Police Commissioner Erlan Munaji, stressed that the police would not tolerate violence, particularly attacks and the use of firearms against police facilities.

'The handling of this case demonstrates how seriously Jambi Police take law enforcement. We will deal professionally and in accordance with applicable laws with any actions that threaten public safety and order. Investigators are also conducting the proceedings objectively and transparently, based on the available evidence and with full respect for the presumption of innocence,' he said.

Police will continue examining the suspects' statements and the items seized during the operation to establish the full circumstances of the attack and determine the potential criminal liability of each individual involved.

Public Urged to Remain Calm and Avoid Provocation

Alongside the investigation update, Erlan urged residents of Merangin Regency to remain calm and work together to maintain security and public order.

He warned the public against believing unverified information, particularly reports that could inflame emotions or trigger tensions between different community groups.

Erlan also urged residents not to take retaliatory action against any individual or group, warning that such behaviour could escalate tensions and undermine security across Merangin Regency.

Jambi Police, he said, would continue to adopt a humane and dialogue-based approach towards all sections of the community, including members of the indigenous Suku Anak Dalam community.

'We will continue to take a humane and persuasive approach towards the entire community, including members of the Suku Anak Dalam. However, whenever a suspected criminal offence occurs, the police will continue to enforce the law firmly and in accordance with the applicable regulations,' he concluded.

The statement reflects the police's intention to balance law enforcement with a sensitive approach towards the communities involved. Investigations, the police emphasised, must be conducted strictly in accordance with the law, without prejudice against any particular ethnic or social group.

As the investigation continues, residents are encouraged to maintain dialogue, avoid provocation and allow the relevant law enforcement authorities to handle the case.

The arrest of eight suspects within less than 24 hours marks significant progress in the investigation. However, further inquiries remain essential to establish exactly how the incident unfolded and determine the legal responsibility of everyone involved.

Jambi Police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting public safety and handling the case professionally while respecting the rights of all citizens. (IDNC)
