JAMBI | INDATANEWS.COM - The Head of the Jambi Regional Police, Inspector General of Police (Irjen Pol) Krisno H. Siregar, attended the opening of the Independent Journalist Competency Test (UKW) organized by the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) in Jambi City on Wednesday (May 20, 2026). The event marked an important moment in strengthening journalistic professionalism amid the rapid flow of digital information and the rising threat of misinformation.
The opening ceremony was also attended by Governor of Jambi Al Haris, Mayor of Jambi Maulana, members of the Jambi Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda), the Public Relations Division of the Jambi Regional Police, media organization leaders, and local press figures.Digital Era Demands Accurate Information
In his remarks, Irjen Pol Krisno H. Siregar emphasized that journalists hold a major responsibility in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of information received by the public."When various local issues emerge in the region, it is our shared responsibility to present accurate information, clarify the real facts, and provide objective understanding to the public," he said.
He also noted that the rapidly evolving digital media landscape has significantly changed public information consumption patterns. Social media has become one of the main sources of news, requiring journalists to be more adaptive, fast, and still highly professional in their work."The flow of information is extremely fast. Therefore, journalists must maintain information quality to prevent public unrest and misinformation," he added.
The Jambi Police Chief stressed that journalistic competence is not only measured by technical skills but also by integrity and moral values.
He highlighted three key pillars of journalism—humanity, justice, and honesty—as the foundation of professional and trustworthy media practice."These values are essential in building a professional, credible, and trusted press," he stated.
He further expressed hope that the UKW program would produce journalists who fully understand the journalistic code of ethics, are capable of verifying information, and consistently produce accurate and balanced reporting.
Police Support Media Professionalism
Meanwhile, Head of Public Relations of the Jambi Regional Police, Kombes Pol Erlan Munaji, affirmed the institution's strong support for improving journalists' competencies through the UKW program.According to him, a professional press plays a strategic role in maintaining public order and security while fostering a healthy public information ecosystem.
"The press is a strategic partner of the National Police in educating the public and countering the spread of hoaxes and disinformation," he said.He also added that the Jambi Police Chief emphasized the importance of data- and fact-based criticism in maintaining the media's social control function within a democratic system.
