Aceh Government and BAM DPR RI Push for Resolution of Decades-Long Land Conflict

BANDA ACEH | INDATANEWS.COM – The Aceh provincial government has intensified efforts to resolve a longstanding land and settlement dispute involving former residents of Blang Lancang–Rancong in Lhokseumawe City, which has remained unresolved for more than five decades.

Aceh Provincial Secretary, M. Nasir, received a working delegation from the House of Representatives' Public Aspirations Agency (BAM DPR RI) on Monday, June 8, at the Potensi Daerah I Room of the Aceh Provincial Secretariat. The meeting focused on the unresolved status of land rights affecting communities since 1974.

Nasir stated that the issue has persisted for approximately 52 years and continues to impact 542 families who remain in legal uncertainty regarding land ownership, relocation options, and compensation mechanisms.

Two Proposed Solutions: Relocation or Compensation

According to Nasir, the provincial government views the case as a structural issue requiring a comprehensive and integrated resolution involving social, economic, and legal dimensions.

He noted that two main policy options are currently being considered: relocation of affected residents or compensation. The Aceh government, however, leans toward a compensation scheme equivalent to land ownership rights for each affected family.

Nasir emphasized the importance of sustained dialogue among all stakeholders to ensure a fair and workable solution.

"This issue must be discussed collectively so that the best possible solution can be reached. We hope the presence of BAM DPR RI will bring a breakthrough for the affected citizens," he said.

BAM DPR RI Calls for Fair and Just Resolution

BAM DPR RI Chairman Ahmad Heryawan reaffirmed the institution's commitment to addressing unresolved public concerns in the regions, particularly those involving citizens' fundamental rights.

He said the visit was part of the council's mandate to absorb and follow up on public aspirations directly from the field.

Heryawan expressed optimism that the meeting could serve as a turning point in resolving the decades-old dispute, stressing that the state must ensure legal certainty and justice for affected residents.

"We hope this visit can help resolve this 50-year deadlock. The state must fulfill its obligations to its citizens," he stated.

Multi-Stakeholder Engagement Strengthens Resolution Efforts

The meeting was also attended by Lhokseumawe Deputy Mayor Husaini, representatives from the Aceh provincial government, members of the Aceh Provincial Parliament's NasDem faction, including Nurchalis, as well as representatives from state energy company Pertamina in Aceh.

Various regional agencies and relevant working units of the provincial government were also present, underscoring the cross-sectoral nature of the issue.

Both parties agreed to continue dialogue in order to formulate a sustainable and equitable resolution for all affected families. (IDNC)
