GUNUNGSITOLI | INDATANEWS.COM - North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution plans to build a logistics warehouse in the Roro Port area, Gunungsitoli Idanoi District, Gunungsitoli City. The facility will serve as a future center for monitoring the supply of food commodities and strategic goods to prevent potential shortages when bad weather disrupts distribution routes to the Nias Islands.
The plan to construct the logistics warehouse was revealed by Bobby Nasution during an inspection of the Roro Port development area on Thursday, July 16, 2026. During the visit, the North Sumatra Governor was accompanied by Gunungsitoli Mayor Sowa'a Laoli.
Bobby explained that the logistics warehouse is one of the government's efforts to strengthen the food distribution system in island regions. Given the geographical conditions of the Nias Islands, which rely heavily on sea transportation, the distribution of goods requires a more controlled and resilient system.
"For this reason, we need to collaborate with the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) to measure the actual volume of goods flow in this region," Bobby said.
Bobby stated that the construction of the logistics warehouse at Roro Port aims to ensure the availability of staple foods and various strategic commodities for residents across the Nias Islands. The facility will function as a supply monitoring center, allowing the government to anticipate disruptions in goods distribution caused by weather conditions.
According to Bobby, bad weather remains one of the biggest challenges in transporting goods from Sumatra Island to the Nias Islands. When sea conditions prevent vessels from operating, the availability of essential supplies for residents can be affected.
"Ensure that this facility operates properly and can be used as a tool to control the supply of staple foods and other strategic goods. The biggest challenge here is the weather, which can disrupt the transportation of goods from Sumatra," Bobby said.
To ensure that the logistics warehouse meets actual regional needs, the North Sumatra Provincial Government will work together with BPS to analyze the incoming and outgoing flows of various commodities. The data will serve as the basis for determining storage capacity and developing an effective distribution system in the Nias region.
In addition to securing food supplies, the logistics warehouse is also expected to reduce transportation costs, accelerate the distribution of goods, and support economic growth in island areas.
Bobby views Gunungsitoli Roro Port as having significant potential to develop into a central logistics hub. Its strategic location, supported by land transportation connectivity, makes the area an important point for linking various regions across the Nias Islands.
Through the development of the port area and the construction of the logistics warehouse, food supplies in the future will no longer depend entirely on daily shipping conditions. Reserve stocks stored at the facility can serve as a solution when sea transportation is disrupted.
The infrastructure development is part of the North Sumatra Provincial Government's efforts to strengthen the regional logistics system. The government aims to ensure that communities in island areas continue to receive essential goods consistently.
Meanwhile, North Sumatra Transportation Agency Head Yuda Setiawan stated that the Gunungsitoli Roro Port area covers approximately 25,915 square meters. The site has already been divided into several zones to support port operations.
He explained that the warehouse area covers 5,668 square meters, the parking area 3,205 square meters, the terminal zone 4,510 square meters, and the utility zone 2,977 square meters.
The North Sumatra Provincial Government plans to begin the construction and development of the Gunungsitoli Roro Port area in 2026. The program is part of a strategy to strengthen the logistics system and stabilize the supply of goods across the Nias Islands.
The development will focus not only on building physical infrastructure but also on establishing a distribution system capable of addressing the unique challenges of an island region. The government expects the logistics warehouse to serve as a supply buffer when transportation routes are disrupted.
Through the construction of the logistics warehouse at Gunungsitoli Roro Port, the North Sumatra Provincial Government aims to secure the long-term availability of food and strategic commodities. The initiative is expected to provide direct benefits to residents of the Nias Islands, particularly during extreme weather conditions that may hinder the movement of goods. (IDNC)
