MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - Despite continuous rainfall in Medan, the enthusiasm of thousands of participants and visitors at the Karnaval Nusantara, held as part of the 18th National Working Meeting (Rakernas) of the Association of Indonesian City Governments (APEKSI) 2026, remained undiminished. Carrying the theme "The Sparkling of Local Heroes and Culture," the national cultural event continued in a lively and colorful atmosphere, drawing strong public attention despite unfavorable weather conditions.
The procession, featuring delegations from 98 cities across Indonesia, moved along a long route starting from Jalan Pemuda, continuing through Jalan Ahmad Yani in the Kesawan area, and concluding at Lapangan Merdeka Medan. Along the route, large crowds lined the streets to witness the diverse cultural performances presented by each participating region.The opening formation was led by the delegation from Semarang, while the closing segment was performed by Banjarmasin and the host city of Medan. This arrangement created a dynamic flow throughout the parade and maintained a vibrant atmosphere until the end.
Despite light but persistent rain, neither participants nor spectators showed signs of discouragement. Thousands remained along the entire route, willingly enduring the downpour to witness cultural performances from various regions.
Each performance was met with applause and enthusiasm, reflecting a strong appreciation for Indonesia's cultural diversity.The costumes were not merely visual displays but also embodied cultural education and historical storytelling. The diversity of materials used highlighted the creative range of participants, blending traditional values with modern design approaches.
Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas and Chairperson of TP PKK Medan Airin Rico Waas appeared in traditional Malay attire in yellow. Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya Sugiarto also attended, wearing complete black Malay traditional clothing.
The attending leaders actively greeted participating delegations and expressed appreciation for their cultural presentations. Their presence further strengthened the festive atmosphere despite the challenging weather conditions."Wonderful! None of the participating cities left early. Everyone presented their performances. I also greatly appreciate the citizens who stayed despite the rain," he said.
He further noted that the cultural works presented went beyond entertainment and deserved international recognition."Our artists' works are extraordinary and have international potential. We must continue to promote our culture and make it visible globally," Rico Waas stated.
Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya Sugiarto also praised the event, expressing admiration for the large-scale performance presented by the host city of Medan."Thank you to the Mayor of Medan for a spectacular event. Despite the rain, everyone stayed in place and delivered a magnificent collective dance performance," he said.
He added that the participants' endurance symbolized strong cooperation within APEKSI."This is a sign of strong cooperation and solidarity among Indonesian cities," he added.
The event concluded with a colossal dance performance involving 300 children, marking the highlight of the cultural evening. The celebration was attended by APEKSI Chair Eri Cahyadi (Mayor of Surabaya), Deputy Mayor of Medan Zakiyuddin Harahap, Speaker of the Medan City Council Wong Chun Sen, Regional Secretary Wiriya Alrahman, as well as representatives from local security and government institutions.
